Chapter 29 - THE BOY RETURNS TO THE GARDEN

Spring arrived on Seabreeze Lane.
The Collins mansion had new owners.
They removed the tall privacy hedges.
Sunlight reached the Parker garden earlier each morning.
Ethan’s soccer coach visited.
The team wanted him back.
No hearing.
No publicity.
No speech about bravery.
Only an invitation.
Ethan carried the worn ball outside.
He placed it on the exact patch of grass where the accident began.
The repaired sprinkler stood several feet away.
Caleb waited near the porch.
“Want me to move it?”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Michael stood beside the police cruiser.
Rebecca remained near the front door.
Neither parent entered the garden.
This moment belonged to Ethan.
He took three steps.
Then stopped.
The memory returned.
Ava’s cry.
Madison’s accusation.
Rebecca’s hand.
The taste of blood.
Ethan backed away from the ball.
Caleb did not tell him to be brave.
He sat on the grass.
After a moment, Ethan sat beside him.
They talked about school.
A new video game.
The youth league.
Twenty minutes passed.
Ethan stood again.
He approached the ball.
This time, he kicked gently toward Caleb.
Caleb returned it.
The ball traveled between them.
No crowd gathered.
No one shouted.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Michael touched her shoulder.
“Let him see you calm.”
She lowered her hands.
The game continued.
Ethan kicked harder.
The ball rolled toward the white fence.
It stopped before reaching the sprinkler.
Ethan ran after it.
He picked it up.
Then he looked at Rebecca.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Do you want to play?”
Surprise crossed her face.
“Only if you want me to.”
He placed the ball on the grass.
Rebecca entered the garden.
She did not turn the invitation into proof that everything was repaired.
They passed the ball slowly.
Ethan laughed when Rebecca missed.
It was the first laugh she had heard from him in the garden since the accident.
Across the street, Nora’s doorbell camera recorded the moment.
May you like
But no one needed the footage.
Everyone present had already chosen to remember it honestly.
