Chapter 16 - AVA’S SECRET

Ava gave a full statement.
She admitted filming Ethan because she wanted to make fun of his old soccer ball.
She admitted lying at school.
She described Madison squeezing her shoulder whenever an adult asked what happened.
She described Grant deleting security footage.
She described the tablet being hidden.
Then Ava revealed another secret.
The Collins family had targeted the Parkers before the accident.
Madison kept a folder about them.
Photographs of Ethan playing outside.
Copies of noise complaints.
Pictures of Rebecca’s car.
Notes about Michael’s patrol schedule.
Grant intended to remove the Parker family from Seabreeze Lane and renovate their rental house.
The accident gave Madison a way to portray Ethan as dangerous.
Police searched the mansion.
They found the folder inside Grant’s office.
One note read:
NEXT INCIDENT—USE CHILD SAFETY CLAUSE.
The homeowners association allowed emergency eviction if a resident threatened neighborhood children.
Madison had planned to use Ava.
The ball was not planned.
The opportunity was.
Rebecca read the notes.
Madison had watched her family for months.
She knew Rebecca feared losing the house.
That was why she demanded immediate punishment.
She expected Rebecca to obey.
And Rebecca had.
“I gave her exactly what she wanted,” Rebecca said.
Michael placed the folder down.
“You were manipulated.”
“I still hit him.”
Both statements were true.
Rebecca refused to use manipulation as an excuse.
Ethan read only one page.
It contained a photograph of him carrying the worn soccer ball.
Beneath it, Madison had written:
BOY IS QUIET. MOTHER EASILY PRESSURED.
Ethan closed the folder.
“She knew.”
Rebecca’s voice broke.
“Yes.”
“She knew you would choose her.”
“I did choose her.”
The honesty hurt.
But Ethan had stopped accepting easier answers.
Rebecca continued counseling.
She also agreed to a child welfare review.
Michael did not interfere.
Their family would not demand trust simply because Madison was worse.
Across town, Madison remained free while prosecutors reviewed charges.
She posted one final message.
MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN MANIPULATED BY A POLICE FAMILY.
Ava saw it.

Then she asked Principal Hale for somewhere else to stay.
She no longer felt safe inside the mansion.
