Chapter 15 - THE FRAME BETWEEN TWO SECONDS

Ava’s tablet video reached the school server.

Grant could not remove it.

He called Principal Hale and demanded deletion.

The principal contacted police instead.

Captain Ward downloaded the file.

It showed everything.

Ava mocking Ethan’s worn ball.

The kick.

The sprinkler.

The sudden change in direction.

The impact.

Then Madison’s first words.

“Don’t move. Let me handle this.”

Ava’s voice followed.

“Mom, it was an accident.”

The recording captured Rebecca arriving.

Madison calling Ethan violent.

Rebecca’s slap.

Ethan’s confusion.

Then Madison noticed the tablet.

The video ended.

There was no missing second.

No damaged frame.

No uncertainty.

Madison knew the truth from the beginning.

She had never believed Ethan attacked Ava.

She had created that accusation while her daughter was still saying it was an accident.

Michael and Rebecca watched the recording with their attorney.

Rebecca covered her mouth when her hand struck Ethan.

She had remembered the moment.

Watching it showed something memory had softened.

Ethan had not raised his voice.

He had not resisted.

He had looked at her as though the safest person in his world had suddenly become a stranger.

Rebecca asked Ethan whether he wanted to watch.

He said no.

The decision belonged to him.

Captain Ward arrested Grant for evidence destruction and witness intimidation.

Madison was ordered to appear for questioning.

She refused.

Her attorney claimed the video had been manipulated.

Ava walked into the police station with Principal Hale.

She carried the tablet in both hands.

Madison arrived minutes later.

“You are a child,” she told Ava. “You do not understand what you have done.”

Ava stepped behind Captain Ward.

“I told the truth.”

“You betrayed your family.”

“No.”

Ava’s voice shook.

“I stopped lying for you.”

Madison looked across the station.

Ethan stood beside Michael.

For the first time since the accident, Ava faced him without her mother’s hand on her shoulder.

“The ball bounced,” she said.

“I knew from the beginning.”

Ethan did not thank her.

Truth was something she already owed him.

But he nodded once.

And Ava began to cry.
