Chapter 7 - REBECCA’S HAND

Rebecca stood before the bathroom mirror.
She raised the hand that struck Ethan.
Nothing about it looked different.
That frightened her.
She had always believed she was a protective mother.
One moment of fear had revealed how quickly protection could become punishment.
Ethan had not spoken to her since dinner.
She found him sitting on the edge of his bed.
The worn soccer ball rested beneath his feet.
Rebecca remained near the door.
“Can I come in?”
He shrugged.
She did not interpret that as permission.
She waited.
Finally, Ethan nodded.
Rebecca sat on the floor instead of beside him.
“I was afraid of Madison.”
Ethan looked confused.
“She wasn’t going to hit you then.”
“No. I was afraid of what she could do to our family.”
“So you hit me first?”
The question broke something inside her.
“Yes.”
She did not defend herself.
She did not mention stress, money or the neighborhood.
“What I did was wrong.”
Ethan stared at the ball.
“Dad says adults are supposed to make kids feel safe.”
“He’s right.”
“I didn’t feel safe with you.”
Rebecca’s tears fell.
She did not ask him to comfort her.
“You do not have to forgive me today.”
“Will you hit me again if someone rich says I did something?”
“No.”
“How do I know?”
Rebecca could not offer a promise and expect trust to return.
“You don’t know yet.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I will have to show you.”
The next morning, Rebecca went to the police station.
She gave a formal statement.
She admitted striking Ethan.
She described Madison pressuring her.
She accepted that she could be investigated for assault.
Captain Ward asked whether Michael told her to confess.
“No.”
“Do you understand this could be used against your family?”
“It should be used to tell the truth.”
Madison learned about the statement within hours.
She called Rebecca.
“You are making this unnecessarily ugly.”
Rebecca recorded the call.
“My son was bleeding.”
“Because you hit him.”
“You wanted to hit him too.”
Madison’s voice became quiet.
“Be careful what you accuse me of.”
Rebecca looked through the window at Ethan.
“I’m done being careful with the truth.”
Madison ended the call.
May you like
Rebecca saved the recording.
For the first time since the accident, she had chosen her son before her fear.
