Chapter 9 - ETHAN STOPS TALKING

Ethan stopped correcting people.

When a classmate called him dangerous, he walked away.

When a teacher asked about the accident, he said nothing.

When Rebecca asked whether he wanted dinner, he shrugged.

Silence was safer.

No one could twist words he did not speak.

Michael watched his son grow quieter each day.

The boy who once described every soccer play now answered in nods.

The worn ball remained untouched beneath his desk.

Rebecca began attending parenting counseling.

She did not tell Ethan this to earn praise.

She went because an apology without change was only another request.

Captain Ward visited the Parker home.

She brought a copy of Michael’s dashcam audio.

“The video did not capture the garden, but the microphone recorded the street.”

They listened.

Madison’s voice was clear.

Children like him only understand consequences.

Then Michael’s cruiser arrived.

Stop! Don’t touch my son!

Madison claimed that line was a threat.

But an earlier sound could be heard beneath it.

Ethan stepping into the fence.

Madison saying:

Hold still.

Then Rebecca:

What are you doing?

The audio proved Madison had approached Ethan before Michael arrived.

It did not show her raised hand.

Captain Ward needed more.

Michael mentioned Ava’s deleted school message.

The district kept backups.

Principal Hale agreed to preserve the account.

The message was recovered.

It had come from Ava’s tablet.

Madison claimed someone else sent it.

Police requested the device.

Grant refused.

“It contains private family information.”

Captain Ward obtained a warrant.

When officers arrived at the Collins mansion, the tablet was gone.

Ava said she had lost it.

Madison said children misplaced things.

Grant said the search was harassment.

From the upstairs landing, Ava watched officers leave.

Later that night, she entered the mansion’s laundry room.

She moved a basket of designer clothing.

Her tablet was hidden behind it.

Ava turned it on.

The deleted message remained in the trash folder.

So did a short video recorded seconds before the ball hit her.

Her mother had told her to erase it.

Ava had pretended she did.

She stared at Ethan’s frozen face on the screen.

May you like

Then she heard Madison coming.

Ava hid the tablet inside her pink backpack.
