Chapter 10 - THE RESIGNATION MABEL NEVER SIGNEDThe voluntary separation document became important.

Mabel’s original termination packet included:
severance.
confidentiality reminder.
property return checklist.
and a page stating:
Employee acknowledges separation is voluntary and mutually agreed.
Mabel never signed.
Why was it there?
Household consultant Trevor Mallory drafted.
He met Valerie two weeks before termination.
Emails:
VALERIE:
I want clean break with no future claim that she was pushed out emotionally.
TREVOR:
If employee agrees voluntary transition, continuity trust may not trigger same review.
VALERIE:
What trust?
TREVOR:
Cecily-funded caregiver plan. I need obtain full documents.
Then no follow-up before firing.
Valerie claimed she did not know financial impact.
Likely true.
But consultant knew enough to include voluntary form.
After immediate termination, he emailed:
Please have Mabel sign separation acknowledgment before final payroll.
Valerie handed packet without reading closely.
This did not make her mastermind avoiding trust.
It exposed how wealthy households outsource legal details then later claim ignorance.
Naomi challenged consultant.
He admitted.
Elliot was furious.
“You tried convert firing into resignation.”
Trevor said:
“I prepared option if mutually agreeable.”
“After she’d been told leave?”
“Standard settlement practice.”
Priya:
“Then should be negotiated with counsel, not buried.”
Trevor’s firm later apologized/waived fee. Professional issue, not criminal.
Valerie asked Mabel privately at mediation:
“Did you think I was trying cheat you?”
Mabel answered:
“I thought you wanted me gone.”
“I didn’t read enough.”
“Neither did I.”
“That is difference.”
“You had lawyers.”
“I had suitcase.”
Valerie flinched.
Power again.
They resolved employment:
Neutral audit estimated $176,400 in unpaid overtime and related benefits across claimable period, plus statutory/contractual adjustments? To avoid exact law, settlement total $235,000 inclusive.
One year severance under trust separate: $118,000 equivalent salary/benefits.
Retirement vesting.
Health coverage.
Total substantial.
Mabel felt uncomfortable.
Naomi:
“Not lottery.”
“Back pay and contract.”
She accepted.
No NDA preventing discussing experience, though privacy of Jasper protected mutually.
Mabel agreed not to disclose child medical/private information—something she would anyway.
Valerie wanted broader confidentiality.
Mabel refused.
“I won’t sell stories.”
“But I won’t sign my life silent.”
Elliot supported.
Settlement signed.
Valerie did not like but accepted.
This could have ended all contact.
Instead birthday approached.
Mabel had choice.
Return as guest.
Would she?
She bought Jasper a simple book about constellations.
Not expensive.
He had loved stars.
She hesitated over card.
Wrote:
For Jasper — Keep looking up, even when adults are looking at paperwork. Love, Mabel.
Denise laughed.
“You’re going back to mansion as guest.”
“Yes.”
“Wear red.”
“Why?”
“Because they’ve only seen navy.”
Mabel chose deep green dress instead.
Identity.
At birthday, Jasper saw and shouted:
“You look weird again!”
Mabel laughed.
Valerie did too.
This time no sting.
The party was small by Aldridge standards.
Ten children.
Parents.
Cake.
Mabel did not serve.
When someone handed her empty plate assuming staff, Valerie immediately said:
“Mabel is our guest.”
No overperformance.
Just correction.
Mabel noticed.
Later Jasper asked:
“Can you cut cake?”
Mabel looked Valerie.
Valerie said:
“If you want.”
Mabel helped because Jasper asked, not employment.
Choice transformed gesture.
At end, Jasper hugged.
“Are you coming tomorrow?”
“No.”
His face fell.
“Why?”
“I have my life.”
“What do you do?”
Mabel realized he did not know.
She had always existed at house.
“I’m helping my sister renovate kitchen.”
“I’m taking a gardening class.”
“I might travel.”
“You travel?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Maybe Maine.”
“Why?”
“Because I’ve never been.”
Jasper considered.
“Can you send picture?”
“Yes.”
This was healthy.
Mabel became person with horizons beyond him.
It hurt Jasper a little.
That was okay.
Children can learn loved adults have lives.
Valerie watched.
Perhaps she had feared Mabel wanted possess Jasper.
Instead Mabel was teaching separation better than Valerie had.
That night, after guests left, Valerie found Jasper asleep with constellation book.
She sat beside.
He murmured:
“Mabel has gardening.”
“Yes.”
“She might Maine.”
“Yes.”
“Will she come back?”
“Probably.”
“But people can love you and go places.”
He opened eyes.
“Like Dad?”
Valerie paused.
Elliot traveled.
“Yes.”
“And Dad needs come back more.”
That was new.
Valerie had spent years defending Elliot’s travel.
Now she named cost.

The family was changing not by reinstating old arrangement.
By refusing to need it in same way.
