Chapter 20 - THE LAST PAYMENTThe final installment of employment settlement cleared shortly before Jasper’s tenth birthday.

Mabel received statement:
All back compensation paid.
Trust severance complete.
Retirement funds vested.
Naomi Donnelly closed file.
Mabel felt strange.
For nearly two years, financial process connected her to old job.
Now ended.
Naomi asked:
“Any regret?”
“No.”
“About settlement?”
“No.”
“About not returning?”
Mabel looked out office.
“No.”
That certainty took time.
At Aldridge Residence, care trust changed at Jasper ten.
Its designated Mabel-specific continuity provisions sunset.
Remaining funds redirected to child wellness/education support according to Cecily’s plan.
No more contractual tie.
Valerie read termination clause final time.
She said to Elliot:
“It’s over.”
“What?”
“Your mother’s control.”
He laughed.
“She’d disagree from grave.”
Valerie smiled.
Then:
“I’m glad she did.”
That was big.
Elliot looked.
“Really?”
“I hated it.”
“But without trust, we might have paid eight weeks and told ourselves generous.”
He nodded.
“Mabel might not have had lawyer.”
“Yes.”
“Jasper maybe no transition.”
“Yes.”
Valerie:
“I don’t like being wrong.”
“I noticed.”
She threw cushion.
No violence serious; playful? User said no violence perhaps keep none. She glared instead.
They laughed.
Cecily’s structure did what systems should:
protect when emotions fail.
Then end.
No permanent control.
At Jasper’s tenth birthday, Mabel attended with Arthur.
Not employee.
Not consultant.
Guest.
Valerie greeted at door.
“Come in.”
No tension.
Jasper ran.
He was taller.
Still hugged.
“Ten!”
“I know.”
“You old too.”
Mabel gasped.
Arthur laughed.
Valerie said:
“Don’t insult guests.”
Jasper grinned.
Cake.
No service.
When Mabel stood to help dishes, Valerie said:
“Guest.”
Mabel:
“I’m capable.”
Valerie:
“I know.”
“But choice?”
Mabel thought.
“Fine. I choose sit.”
May you like
They smiled.
Symbol.
