Chapter 14 - JASPER’S SCHOOL CONFERENCEAt eight, Jasper’s school held family project.

Students interviewed someone who cared for them when younger.
Jasper chose Mabel.
Valerie felt sting.
Then asked:
“Why?”
“Because assignment says when younger.”
“You and Dad know now.”
“Mabel knows baby.”
That was logical.
Valerie agreed.
Interview happened video with teacher-approved questions.
“When I was baby, what did I like?”
“Ceiling fans.”
“Why?”
“Because you had excellent taste.”
“What food?”
“Banana.”
“What scared?”
“Vacuum.”
Jasper laughed.
“Did Mom hold me?”
Valerie froze behind camera.
Mabel answered immediately:
“Of course.”
“Your mom sang same song badly every night.”
Valerie stared.
She had forgotten song.
“What song?”
Mabel sang one line of public? avoid copyrighted lyrics. She hummed.
Valerie remembered.
Tears.
Mabel continued:
“Your dad walked circles around dining room when you had colic.”
“Your grandmother Cecily called every pediatrician in Connecticut.”
Jasper’s infancy became collective story, not Mabel-centric.
This mattered.
After interview, Jasper asked:
“Who was with me most?”
Mabel paused.
“Different times, different people.”
“You were never alone.”
Truth with nuance.
Maybe Mabel logged most hours some months.
No need rank.
Valerie thanked after.
“You could have said you.”
Mabel looked.
“That would be unhelpful.”
“Also not whole truth.”
Valerie nodded.
