Then sadness.

“I wanted this, and now it feels like loss.”
“Because?”
“If he needs her less, maybe years mattered less.”
Dr. Hart smiled.
“Attachment that supports growth does not disappear when child grows.”
Valerie nodded.
This was same logic she once denied.

Mabel stable but separate.

Sofia.
friends.
teachers.
Network.
Not one irreplaceable servant.
Not isolated nuclear ideal.
Community.
One Sunday Mabel canceled visit because Arthur sick.
Jasper disappointed.
“Can she cancel?”
Valerie said:
“Yes.”
“She has life.”
He sighed.
Then invited friend over.
Two years earlier cancellation would feel abandonment.
Now inconvenience.
Healing.
Valerie called Mabel later:
“He handled.”
Mabel smiled:
“Good.”
No jealousy.
No competition.
At nine, Jasper read old letter from Mabel:
