Chapter 1 — A Birthday Meant to Be Perfect
Emily Harrison watched the lights of Beverly Hills blur past her windshield as she drove home beneath the warm California night. The dashboard clock read 9:38 p.m.—far later than she had promised her husband she would return. Her phone buzzed once on the passenger seat. A text message from Ethan appeared.
"Drive safely. Sophie refuses to sleep until Mommy gets home. ❤️"
Emily's chest tightened.
She quickly locked the screen before Lucas Miller could read the message.
"You've gone quiet," Lucas said with a smile as he loosened the collar of his expensive white shirt. "Second thoughts?"
Emily forced a laugh.
"No... I'm just tired."
Lucas reached across the center console and gently squeezed her hand.
"It's your birthday. You're supposed to be smiling."
For a moment, she smiled back.
Three years earlier, she would never have imagined sitting in a luxury SUV beside her husband's closest friend. Lucas had entered their lives as Ethan's newest business consultant—young, charismatic, intelligent, and effortlessly charming. Ethan admired him almost immediately, inviting him to family dinners, holiday celebrations, and weekend golf outings.
Before long, Lucas became more than a trusted colleague.
He became family.
And somewhere along the way...
He became Emily's secret.
She often convinced herself the affair had happened because Ethan worked too much. Board meetings, investor conferences, overseas business trips—they consumed his life. Lucas always seemed to appear exactly when she felt lonely.
He listened.
He remembered every little detail.
He made her feel noticed again.
Looking back, she couldn't remember the exact moment friendship had crossed the line into betrayal.
She only knew there was no turning back.
Lucas looked out the window as the massive gates of Harrison Manor slowly opened.
"There it is," he said.
The mansion stood beautifully beneath the moonlight, surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens and towering palm trees. It was one of the most recognizable estates in Beverly Hills, a symbol of the Harrison family's success over three generations.
Emily frowned.
"That's strange."
"What?"
"The house is dark."
Lucas glanced toward the mansion.
"Maybe Ethan isn't home yet."
Emily shook her head.
"He always leaves the lights on."
She parked near the front entrance and switched off the engine. The silence felt unusual. No music drifted through the windows. No security guards walked the driveway. Even the fountain in front of the house seemed louder than usual.
Lucas stepped out and walked around to open her door.
"Looks like we have the place to ourselves."
Emily laughed nervously.
"You shouldn't say that."
"Why not?"
"Because every time you say something like that..."
"...something goes wrong."
Lucas grinned.
"I don't believe in bad luck."
He gently wrapped an arm around her waist as they walked toward the front door.
Emily unlocked it with her fingerprint.
The massive oak door swung open.
Darkness greeted them.
"Ethan?" she called.
No answer.
"Honey?"
Still nothing.
Lucas quietly closed the door behind them.
"See?" he whispered.
"We're alone."
Emily looked around the silent mansion.
"I guess everyone went to bed."
Lucas stepped closer until only inches separated them.
His voice became soft.
"Happy birthday."
Before she could answer, he kissed her.
Emily hesitated for only a heartbeat before kissing him back.
Neither of them noticed the faint sound of someone trying not to laugh behind the living room wall.
Hidden only a few feet away...
Ethan stood beside an enormous three-tier birthday cake.
His parents held colorful confetti cannons.
His grandfather smiled proudly.
His younger sister struggled to keep little Sophie from running into the hallway too early.
Everyone had spent the afternoon decorating the mansion.
The lights had been turned off on purpose.
It was supposed to be the perfect surprise.
Grandpa Harrison bent down beside Sophie.
"When Mommy turns on the lights..."
"We all shout together."
Sophie's blue eyes sparkled with excitement.
"I know!"
She giggled.
"We say, 'Happy Birthday!'"
Everyone smiled.
Outside the hidden room, Emily slowly reached her hand toward the wall.
"I should turn on the lights."
Lucas kissed her forehead one last time.
"Make a wish first."
Emily smiled sadly.
If only she knew what waited just a few inches away.
Her fingertips touched the switch.
Then...
She pressed it.
