Chapter 16 — A Marriage Beyond Repair

# The Birthday Surprise
## Chapter 16 — Lucas's Last Letter
Months after the trial, Ethan received an unexpected envelope from the federal correctional facility.
The sender's name made him stop breathing for a moment.
**Lucas Miller.**
Ethan considered throwing the letter away.
Instead, he opened it.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
> Ethan,
>
> By the time you read this, I'll already know my sentence.
>
> I don't expect forgiveness.
>
> I don't deserve it.
>
> There is only one truth I couldn't say in court.
>
> Charles chose me because I was already broken.
>
> I grew up believing loyalty was something people bought.
>
> Then I met your family.
>
> For the first time, I understood what real loyalty looked like.
>
> I should have walked away.
>
> Instead, I betrayed the only people who ever treated me like family.
>
> Emily believed I loved her.
>
> That wasn't true in the beginning.
>
> But somewhere along the way...
>
> I started caring.
>
> By then it was too late.
>
> Every choice I made only caused more damage.
>
> Tell Sophie this wasn't her fault.
>
> She was the only person who looked at me without seeing money, status, or power.
>
> She simply called me Uncle Lucas.
>
> That's the memory I deserve to carry for the rest of my life.
>
> Goodbye.
>
> — Lucas
Ethan folded the letter slowly.
He didn't cry.
He didn't smile.
He simply placed it inside a wooden box with old photographs and memories from another life.
Lucas had destroyed his family.
Nothing would ever change that.
But hatred no longer filled Ethan's heart.
Only sadness remained.
As he closed the box, he quietly whispered to the empty room,
"I hope you finally learned what loyalty really means."
Then he switched off the light and walked away, leaving the past exactly where it belonged.
