# The Birthday Surprise

## Chapter 15 — A Marriage Beyond Repair

The criminal case had ended.

The marriage had not.

Several weeks later, Ethan and Emily sat across from one another inside a quiet mediation office.

Between them rested a stack of legal papers.

Divorce agreements.

Property settlements.

Custody arrangements.

Neither had imagined their lives ending this way.

The mediator quietly stepped outside, giving them a few minutes alone.

Emily stared at the wedding ring still resting on her finger.

"I kept hoping..."

"...you might change your mind."

Ethan looked out the window.

"I tried."

"I truly did."

She swallowed hard.

"I know saying I'm sorry isn't enough."

"No."

"It isn't."

A long silence followed.

Emily finally removed her wedding ring.

She placed it gently beside Ethan's.

"I never stopped loving you."

Ethan looked at the ring without touching it.

"I believe you."

She looked up hopefully.

"But love without trust..."

"...can't survive."

Tears rolled down Emily's cheeks.

"I wish I could go back."

"So do I."

The mediator quietly returned.

The documents were signed one page at a time.

Neither argued over money.

Neither fought over the house.

The only discussion that mattered concerned Sophie.

Ethan spoke first.

"She deserves two parents."

Emily nodded immediately.

"No matter what happened between us..."

"...she should never have to choose."

The agreement was finalized that afternoon.

When Emily stood to leave, she hesitated at the doorway.

"Ethan?"

"Yes."

"I hope one day..."

"...you'll remember me for more than my worst mistake."

Ethan remained silent for several moments.

Then he answered honestly.

"I hope one day..."

"...you remember yourself that way too."

Emily quietly walked away.

Neither of them looked back.

The marriage was over.

But their responsibility as parents had only just begun.
