Chapter 2 — The Lights Came On

The Birthday Surprise
Chapter 2 — The Lights Came On
The mansion exploded into brilliant golden light.
"Happy Birthday!"
The joyful shout echoed through every corner of Harrison Manor.
Confetti cannons fired simultaneously, filling the luxurious living room with shimmering gold and silver paper. Balloons bounced toward the ceiling beneath the crystal chandeliers while Ethan stood proudly beside an enormous birthday cake decorated with thirty elegant candles.
For one perfect second...
Everyone smiled.
Then time seemed to stop.
Emily and Lucas remained locked in each other's embrace.
Neither of them had expected the lights.
Neither had enough time to move.
The room fell silent.
Confetti continued floating gently through the air, but nobody celebrated anymore.
Emily's face instantly turned white.
Lucas slowly released her as though waking from a nightmare.
Across the room, Ethan didn't move.
He still held the silver cake knife in one hand, but the smile that had filled his face only moments earlier disappeared without a word.
His mother slowly lowered the confetti cannon.
His father stared at Lucas in complete disbelief.
Ethan's younger sister covered her mouth with both hands.
Even Grandpa Harrison, a man who had faced business failures, illness, and the death of his own son without shedding tears, suddenly looked unable to breathe.
Only little Sophie didn't understand what she was seeing.
She looked from her mother...
To Lucas...
Then back to her father.
"Mommy?"
Nobody answered.
Emily hurriedly stepped away from Lucas.
"Ethan..."
Her voice shook violently.
"I..."
Nothing came out.
There was no excuse prepared for this moment.
No carefully rehearsed lie.
Only silence.
Lucas straightened his wrinkled shirt and finally spoke.
"This isn't..."
He stopped.
Even he couldn't finish the sentence.
Because everyone in the room had already seen the truth.
Ethan slowly placed the cake knife on the dining table beside the untouched birthday cake.
His movements were calm.
Too calm.
That frightened Emily more than if he had screamed.
He looked directly at Lucas.
"How long?"
Lucas lowered his eyes.
No answer.
Ethan asked again.
"How long have you been sleeping with my wife?"
Emily immediately began crying.
Lucas closed his eyes.
Finally...
"Three years."
A sharp gasp echoed through the room.
Ethan's mother nearly lost her balance.
His father caught her before she fell.
Emily covered her face.
Three years.
More than one thousand days of lies.
One thousand mornings pretending nothing had happened.
One thousand nights sitting at the same family dinner table.
Sophie quietly walked toward Ethan and gently held his hand.
She looked up with innocent confusion.
"Daddy..."
"Why is Grandma crying?"
Ethan knelt beside his daughter.
His own heart was breaking, but he forced a gentle smile.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
Sophie looked around the room again.
Then she whispered something so innocent...
That every adult felt their heart shatter.
"If it's Mommy's birthday..."
"...why does everybody look so sad?"
