Chapter 3 — The Gift That Was Never Opened

The Birthday Surprise
Chapter 3 — The Gift That Was Never Opened

No one moved.

The confetti continued drifting lazily through the air, settling onto the polished marble floor like silent snow. The balloons tied around the living room floated gently beneath the crystal chandeliers, mocking the celebration that had died before it even began.

Emily couldn't bring herself to look at Ethan.

Her husband stood motionless beside the birthday cake, his expression unreadable. In front of him rested a beautifully wrapped gift box and a white envelope with her name written carefully across the front in his handwriting.

Only hours earlier, he had imagined this moment very differently.

He had planned to surprise his wife with the greatest birthday gift of her life.

Now the unopened present felt almost cruel.

Sophie tugged gently at Ethan's sleeve.

"Daddy..."

He looked down at his little girl.

"Can we still sing Happy Birthday?"

The innocent question broke something inside everyone in the room.

Ethan forced himself to smile.

"Not tonight, sweetheart."

Sophie looked confused.

"But Mommy likes birthday songs."

Ethan knelt beside her and gently brushed a curl away from her face.

"Grandpa's going to take you upstairs for a little while."

"Okay?"

She nodded obediently, though she clearly didn't understand.

Grandpa Harrison quietly took Sophie's hand and led her upstairs.

Before disappearing around the corner, Sophie looked back one last time.

"Happy birthday, Mommy."

Emily burst into tears.

The room fell silent again.

Lucas finally found the courage to speak.

"Ethan..."

"I'm sorry."

Ethan slowly turned toward him.

"You've called yourself my best friend for nearly eight years."

Lucas lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"You stood beside me at my wedding."

"I know."

"You held my daughter the day she was born."

Lucas couldn't answer.

"You sat at my dinner table almost every weekend."

"I know."

"And all that time..."

Ethan's voice became quieter.

"...you were sleeping with my wife."

Lucas closed his eyes.

"There isn't any excuse."

"No."

"There isn't."

Emily stepped forward, desperately trying to stop the conversation.

"It wasn't just him."

"I made my own choices."

Ethan looked at her calmly.

"I know you did."

"I was lonely."

"I know."

"I felt invisible."

"I know."

Tears streamed down Emily's face.

"I never meant to hurt you."

For the first time that night, Ethan smiled.

It wasn't a smile of happiness.

It was the smile of someone whose heart had finally broken beyond repair.

"But you did."

He reached for the white envelope lying beside the cake.

"This was supposed to be your birthday present."

Emily stared at it.

"What is it?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he slowly opened the envelope himself.

Inside were several documents.

He handed them to Emily.

Her hands trembled as she looked down.

At the top of the first page, bold letters read:

HARRISON FAMILY TRUST

Below it...

Ownership Transfer: 50%

Emily stared at the papers in disbelief.

"You..."

Ethan nodded.

"I was giving you half of everything I own."

Emily's knees nearly gave way.

The mansion.

The investments.

The company shares.

The family trust.

Everything.

She had spent years risking her marriage because she believed Ethan cared more about business than about her.

Now she realized he had been preparing to give her the one thing she had never asked for.

Complete trust.

The documents slipped from her fingers onto the marble floor.

"I don't deserve this..."

Ethan quietly picked them up.

"No."

"You don't."

He folded the papers, placed them back inside the envelope, and calmly tore every page in half.

No one tried to stop him.

The sound of ripping paper echoed through the silent mansion.

The birthday gift would never be opened.

And neither would the future Ethan had spent years planning.
