Chapter 11 — Emily's Confession

# The Birthday Surprise
## Chapter 11 — Emily's Confession
Charles Harrison was taken into federal custody less than an hour after the confrontation inside his office. As FBI agents escorted him through the executive floor in handcuffs, employees watched in stunned silence. The respected chairman who had spent decades presenting himself as the Harrison family's loyal guardian never looked back.
Ethan remained inside the office, unable to move.
Everything around him suddenly felt unfamiliar.
The leather chair Charles had occupied for years.
The family photographs displayed on the shelves.
Even the framed picture of Ethan's late father now carried an entirely different meaning.
Agent Mercer quietly closed the office door.
"This isn't over."
Ethan nodded.
"I know."
Mercer placed another folder on Charles's desk.
"We searched his office."
"There are still encrypted files we haven't opened."
"But we already know one thing."
Ethan looked up.
"Charles couldn't have done all of this alone."
Meanwhile, Emily sat alone inside an FBI interview room.
She had voluntarily agreed to answer every question.
Not because she expected forgiveness...
But because she wanted the lies to end.
Mercer entered with a recorder.
"This interview is voluntary."
Emily nodded.
"I understand."
He pressed Record.
"When did your relationship with Lucas begin?"
Emily took a deep breath.
"Three years ago."
She explained everything.
The charity gala where Lucas first made her laugh.
The business trips Ethan frequently missed.
The messages.
The secret lunches.
The lies she told herself every day.
"I convinced myself Ethan had stopped loving me."
She whispered.
"It was easier than admitting I was betraying him."
Mercer listened without interruption.
Then he asked quietly,
"Did Lucas ever ask questions about Ethan's company?"
Emily frowned.
"At first..."
"I thought he was just interested."
"What kind of questions?"
"He asked when Ethan traveled."
"Who approved large contracts."
"Which board members disagreed with Charles."
She suddenly stopped speaking.
Her eyes widened.
"Oh my God..."
Mercer leaned forward.
"What is it?"
Emily covered her mouth.
"He wasn't making conversation."
"He was collecting information."
Tears rolled down her face.
"I told him everything."
"I practically handed it to him."
Mercer remained silent.
Emily lowered her head.
"I thought he loved me."
"He never loved me..."
"...did he?"
Mercer answered honestly.
"I don't think he ever intended to."
Emily began crying uncontrollably.
Years of guilt, shame, and regret finally overwhelmed her.
When the interview ended, Mercer quietly left the room.
Outside, Ethan stood waiting.
Neither of them spoke.
Emily looked at him with tear-filled eyes.
"I told them everything."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"I know."
She whispered,
"I'm sorry."
Ethan looked at her for a long moment.
"I believe you."
She looked up hopefully.
Then he quietly added,
"But believing you..."
"...doesn't change what happened."
