Chapter 19 — Letting Go of the Past

# The Birthday Surprise
## Chapter 19 — Letting Go
Several weeks later, Ethan returned to his study late one evening.
Hidden inside the bottom drawer of his desk sat a small wooden memory box.
He hadn't opened it since the divorce.
Slowly, he lifted the lid.
Inside rested pieces of another life.
Wedding photographs.
An old anniversary card.
His wedding ring.
Lucas's final letter.
A faded birthday invitation.
For a long time, Ethan simply looked at them.
Then he smiled sadly.
Some memories deserved respect.
But they no longer deserved control.
He carried the box outside into the garden.
A small fire burned inside the stone fireplace.
One by one, he placed the old photographs into the flames.
Not because he hated the past.
Because he refused to live inside it.
Lucas's letter remained in his hand.
After a moment's thought...
He placed it back inside the box.
It wasn't a memory of betrayal anymore.
It was a reminder of how easily trust could be abused.
As he closed the lid, Sophie's voice echoed from inside the house.
"Daddy!"
"I'm coming!"
Ethan smiled.
He left the box on the shelf in his study.
Not forgotten.
Simply finished.
He walked back toward the warm lights of the house.
Toward the people who still needed him.
Toward tomorrow.
