Chapter 14 - WHAT LOGAN FOUND IN HIS OWN OFFICELogan avoided home office for weeks.

It felt contaminated.
Then one Saturday he decided clean.
Megan offered.
“No.”
“You sure?”
“I need.”
He opened drawers.
Deployment checklist.
Old certificates.
Wedding photo.
Then found a folder behind printer cabinet.
Not hidden professionally.
Just shoved.
Inside:
copies of Logan’s driver license.
Original purchase signature pages.
A scan of prior notarized statement.
Why there?
Megan did not put.
Darlene had access.
These documents could supply signature samples and identity details.
Investigators took.
Logan’s anger returned.
He called mother through lawyers? He could ask in mediated session.
“Did you copy my ID?”
Darlene:
“I gave Trevor copies from office.”
“For what?”
“Estate planning.”
“Without permission.”
“Yes.”
“Did he ask?”
“Yes.”
“Did he say needed deed?”
“He said verification.”
“Did you know my signature would be used?”
“No.”
“Did you ask why he needed old signed closing papers?”
Darlene cried.
“No.”
Willful blindness again.
Logan’s office also had old letter from father Walter.
He found accidentally.
Walter wrote when Logan joined Army:
You will spend life thinking strength means making sure everyone is okay before admitting you are scared. Try not to.
Logan sat.
His father knew.
He had done.
Deployment:
“Everyone okay?”
Megan:
“Yes.”
He accepted because needed.
Homecoming forced.
Logan started individual therapy after chaplain recommendation.
He admitted:
“I resent Megan not telling.”
Therapist:
“And yourself?”
“More.”
“Why?”
“I wasn’t available emotionally?”
“You were deployed. Availability limited.”
“I still could ask better.”
“Then ask better now.”
Not endless guilt.
He told Megan:
“When I ask ‘everything okay?’ you say yes automatically.”
“So I’ll ask specific.”
She smiled.
“Like?”
“How did Mom talk to you this week?”
“Are you sleeping?”
“What decision are you avoiding telling me?”
“Annoying.”
“Good.”
They laughed.
Office became shared again.
Megan moved work paperwork there.
No locked masculine territory.
They installed separate document safe.
Not from paranoia.
Organization.
House systems changed.
Darlene no access.
Trevor no.
The hidden copies helped evidence but no dramatic new mastermind.
That was realistic.
The biggest discovery was psychological:
Logan had assumed home office remained private while away.
He had not considered that boundaries require explicit.
Not his fault someone violated.
But future.
He destroyed old unnecessary ID copies after legal retention.
Good data hygiene.
No need technical.
What Logan found in office did not change identity of culprit.
It proved preparation.
Darlene had given Trevor documents that made false transfer possible.

She may not have created forged signature, but she supplied materials.
Responsibility.
