Chapter 17 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DEEDEight months after birthday, civil court entered final order.

Recorded deed transferring Logan’s interest was void because Logan had not executed or authorized.

Title corrected.

Juniper Crest returned to Logan and Megan joint ownership as before.

Megan read updated record three times.

Logan printed.

She laughed.

“Frame?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t want deed wall art.”

Fair.

The Avery Heritage Property Trust still existed but held no interest in house.

Darlene amended/suspended? Eventually dissolved it entirely.

She removed Finn as beneficiary to stop symbolism and placed her own assets in ordinary estate trust with independent counsel.

No more Juniper Crest.

Criminal case:

Trevor charged.

Darlene charged with participation/concealment? We'll keep generic.

Darlene accepted negotiated plea to offenses related to knowingly maintaining and attempting to benefit from a fraudulent property filing after learning Logan had not authorized it. Her lack of prior record, cooperation, restitution, and no successful second transfer mattered. She received substantial fine, probation, community service? Could be.

Trevor, more direct document fraud, received harsher including short custodial sentence and probation, restitution, professional consequences.

No exact statute.

Satisfying but plausible.

Darlene did not go bankrupt.

She did not lose everything.

She lost control, reputation, money, access.

More fitting.

The deed truth:

Darlene initiated preservation scheme.

Trevor fabricated authorization and caused false deed.

Darlene initially may have thought some authorization existed.

Then learned Logan had not signed.

Instead of correcting, she hid and tried secure Megan half before Logan returned.

That became her deliberate wrong.

Megan found this distinction important.

Not because less bad.

Because facts.

She told Darlene in final mediated session:

“I don’t need you be mastermind.”

“What you did after you knew is enough.”

Darlene cried.

“Yes.”

Darlene explained deepest fear:

“When Walter died, I watched people tell me I had no right to house because debts.”

“I promised you would never lose home.”

Logan:

“So you made Megan lose hers.”

“Yes.”

There.

Pattern.

Darlene:

“I thought I was securing Finn.”

“I was securing myself against old fear.”

Megan:

“Exactly.”

Darlene apologized not only to Megan but Logan.

“I treated your marriage as temporary compared with blood.”

“I treated Megan’s ownership as conditional.”

“I was wrong.”

Logan:

“Yes.”

“Do you forgive?”

“Not yet.”

She nodded.

Good.
