Chapter 8 - WHY WAS TREVOR HIDING?Trevor did not flee town.

He wanted to.

His attorney told him not.

The morning after cooperation, he sent Logan a text:

I’m sorry. I know that means nothing.

Logan did not respond.

Megan asked:

“Do you hate him?”

“Yes.”

“Simple.”

“Mom isn’t.”

“No.”

Trevor was easier.

Cousin motivated by money.

No childhood history.

No bedtime stories.

Darlene complicated.

Trevor’s role expanded when forensic accountants traced Darlene payments.

Forty thousand official “property consulting.”

Another fifteen thousand from trust later.

Why?

Trevor said bonus after recorded deed.

Darlene claimed reimbursement.

Bank memo:

Completion.

Not good.

Trevor also expected twenty-five thousand after Megan transfer.

This was why folder at party mattered.

Completion payment.

He needed signature.

He had planned to leave with executed papers.

Instead Logan appeared.

Why hide?

Because Logan in uniform at back door was not part of schedule.

Trevor immediately knew:

If Logan saw deed while standing alive and present, lie collapsed.

The entire first transfer rested partly on implied authorization during deployment.

Logan’s surprise arrival turned abstraction into man.

Trevor panicked.

He told police:

“When I saw him, I knew done.”

“Why not hand folder?”

“Fear.”

“Of Logan?”

“Of charges.”

Important.

No physical threat.

Trevor feared accountability.

He also admitted Darlene did not expect Logan home for three weeks.

She thought deployment return window later.

So birthday chosen because:

Family present.

Megan emotionally tired.

Finn’s celebration invoked legacy.

Easier to pitch trust as “for Finn.”

Manipulative.

Darlene wanted Megan sign under family pressure.

Relatives would hear:

This protects baby.

If Megan objected, she looks selfish.

Megan realized.

“That’s why she kept saying Avery legacy all morning.”

Logan:

“She knew paperwork coming.”

“Yes.”

“And Finn sick didn’t stop.”

“No.”

This hurt more than coffee.

Darlene saw sick grandson and continued plan.

Maybe because she didn’t expect serious illness.

Still.

Megan asked Darlene in mediated call later:

“Would you have handed me deed while Finn had fever?”

Darlene closed eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Trevor was there.”

“Not easy reschedule.”

Megan laughed.

“Listen to yourself.”

Darlene cried.

“I know.”

“You prioritized document over baby.”

“I thought he had mild fever.”

“He did.”

“Still needed me.”

“Yes.”

“You were telling me coffee.”

“I was angry.”

“At what?”

“You kept refusing.”

“All year.”

There.

Darlene experienced Megan’s autonomy as refusal.

Megan said:

“I am adult.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Darlene had no answer.

Trevor’s hiding also revealed he was not proud.

People sometimes imagine conspirators as confident.

He had been anxious for months.

Drinking.

Sleeping poorly.

He told wife partial.

His wife Camille Knox thought he was doing ordinary estate planning for aunt.

When news reached, she separated.

Not because criminal case only.

Because debt lies.

Trevor had hidden finances.

Pattern.

Secrecy breeds.

Camille called Megan.

“I’m sorry.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should.”

Megan:

“Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Take responsibility because you’re wife.”

Camille cried.

Megan recognized.

Women absorbing men/family acts.

“No.”

Camille thanked.

Trevor moved into rental.

Sold SUV.

Legal fees.

Consequences.

He agreed no direct contact Logan/Megan until case resolved.

Good.

Logan saw him once at attorney deposition.

Trevor looked smaller.

No blazer.

After, he whispered:

“I thought your mom was right that house should stay in family.”

Logan stopped.

“It was in family.”

“I mean Avery.”

“My wife is Avery.”

Trevor looked.

“By marriage.”

Logan stared.

“And?”

Trevor realized.

Bloodline logic.

Darlene had infected frame.

Logan:

“Finn doesn’t become more mine because Megan owns less.”

Trevor nodded.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

“I’m learning.”

Logan walked.

The question “Why was Trevor hiding?” had simple answer:

Because he knew document could not survive daylight.

The more important question:

Why did so many adults believe Megan’s ownership was less legitimate simply because her surname came through marriage?

That belief was not in legal documents.

May you like

It was in family culture.

And Logan intended to end it.
