Chapter 18 - THE FAMILY TABLE TURNSFinn’s second birthday was deliberately small.

Nine people.

Not twenty.

No formal cake display.

One homemade-looking but professionally baked cake.

Megan laughed at irony.

Darlene was invited for one hour.

This was first time back at Juniper Crest since case.

She arrived exactly on time.

Rang bell.

Did not enter.

Megan opened.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

“Come.”

Darlene handed Finn small wooden truck.

No giant gift.

No gold.

He did not remember conflict.

He smiled.

Darlene cried slightly.

“Hey, sweetheart.”

Megan watched.

No fear.

Boundaries.

Family table outside.

Relatives served own coffee.

Logan intentionally left carafe in middle.

Aunt Cynthia laughed:

“Everybody apparently capable.”

Megan smiled.

Darlene heard.

Looked embarrassed.

Then smiled too.

At cake, Finn smashed frosting happily unlike year prior.

Logan took video.

Megan watched husband.

He had learned bedtime.

Pediatric appointments.

Daycare pickup.

Favorite book.

He was no longer surprising visitor.

Present father.

After cake, Uncle Roy raised glass.

“To Finn.”

Then paused.

“And to Megan and Logan’s home.”

Darlene looked.

Roy continued:

“Theirs.”

Simple.

Family understood.

Darlene did not object.

Later, one relative asked about legal case.

Logan:

“Not birthday.”

Good.

No public shaming.

After guests left, Darlene approached Megan.

“Thank you for inviting.”

“Finn likes you.”

“I love.”

“I know.”

Darlene hesitated.

“Can I ask if someday I could babysit?”

Megan considered.

“Not yet.”

Pain.

“Okay.”

“Maybe future.”

“Okay.”

This was table turning:

Darlene accepted no.

Not forced.

Not manipulated.

She left.

Logan asked:

“How feel?”

“Good.”

“Sad.”

“Good.”

Multiple.

The relatives who had waited for Megan to serve coffee now cleared plates.

Not because punishment.

May you like

Basic decency.

Family culture shifted.
