THE HUSBAND WHO DIED TWICE / Chapter 22 / 25

Chapter 22 - CLAIRE TOOK THE WITNESS STAND

Julian looked at me across the courtroom.

Alive.

No elegant navy suit.

No confident smile.

I described our marriage.

The debt.

The funeral.

The lobby.

His attorney asked why I kept the USB for three years if I did not know what it contained.

“Because someone searched my home for it.”

“You wanted leverage?”

“I wanted to understand why a dead man still frightened living people.”

He displayed my wedding ring.

“You continued wearing it.”

“On a necklace.”

“Because you loved him?”

“Yes.”

The courtroom became quiet.

I continued.

“Love made his betrayal painful. It did not make my evidence false.”

His attorney had no useful response.

Julian was convicted on fraud, identity, conspiracy, theft, and obstruction charges.

Gregory was convicted separately.

The marina accomplices faced their own consequences.
