Chapter 9 - THE FUNERAL WITHOUT A BODY

Julian watched his own funeral from a rented apartment.
Gregory arranged the live video.
I learned that from recovered messages.
Julian saw me stand beside the empty coffin.
Saw his mother collapse.
Saw me place our wedding photograph among the flowers.
He wrote to Gregory:
SHE BELIEVES IT.
Three words.
No regret.
Only success.
The boat fire used animal blood, Julian’s watch, and scorched clothing.
A corrupt marina employee altered footage.
A physician signed a death declaration based on circumstantial evidence and presumed loss at sea.
No body was recovered.
The certificate came too quickly.
Gregory paid every person who accelerated it.
Afterward, Julian traveled under a prepared passport.
He watched insurance negotiations from Europe.
Then he created Julian Mercer.
The fraud did not succeed because systems were foolish.
It succeeded because several people accepted small irregularities for money or convenience.
Together, those irregularities produced a dead man who remained alive.
The case was reopened.
My status as beneficiary of suspicious debt was corrected.
The funeral record remained part of the criminal evidence.
I requested that Julian’s false grave marker be removed.
His mother agreed.
“We buried a lie,” she said.
“No. We buried what he made us believe.”
She looked at me.

“That doesn’t feel different.”
I understood.
