Chapter 3 - THE DEAD MAN LOOKED DOWN AT HER

Hotel security escorted us into a private conference room.
Julian refused to surrender his phone.
Vanessa did not force him.
She called the hotel’s legal director and ordered the lobby recordings preserved.
I placed the USB on the table but kept one hand over it.
Julian watched every movement.
“You shouldn’t have brought that here.”
His voice was quiet.
Vanessa heard.
“Why?”
“It contains client data.”
“Whose client data?”
He looked at me.
“Claire stole it from my office.”
“Before or after you died?” I asked.
Silence.
Vanessa sat across from him.
“You told me your name was Julian Mercer.”
“It is.”
“Were you married to her?”
“No.”
I unlocked my phone and displayed our wedding photograph.
Same face.
Same small scar beneath his right ear.
Julian stopped denying recognition.
Instead, he changed the story.
“Claire and I separated.”
“You were declared dead.”
“I had enemies.”
“You let me identify your watch.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By leaving me with $800,000 in fraudulent debt?”
Vanessa turned toward him.
“What debt?”
“Business obligations she signed.”
“The signatures were forged.”
Julian stood.
“This conversation is finished.”
Security blocked the door.
Vanessa’s voice became cold.
“No. It has finally started.”
The police arrived.
Julian’s identity documents identified him as Julian Mercer.
Initial database checks found no obvious forgery.
The officer asked whether I had proof beyond a photograph and ring.
I gave him Julian’s old fingerprints from our marriage application.
The comparison would take time.
Vanessa looked at Julian.
“If she is wrong, I will apologize.”
“And if she is right?” I asked.
May you like
Vanessa’s eyes remained on him.
“Then he won’t leave this hotel with anything that belongs to my family.”
