Chapter 12 - VIVIAN’S PERFECT STORYPolice searched Vivian’s apartment.

She was gone.

Her red designer luggage remained in the bedroom, creating the appearance that she had not traveled.

A housekeeper told officers Vivian left carrying only a garment bag.

At Gare de Lyon, security cameras recorded a woman wearing a blonde wig and dark glasses entering the platform for Switzerland.

She never boarded.

Vivian knew the cameras would send police in the wrong direction.

Adrian understood the pattern.

“She creates a story before she acts.”

Sophie looked toward The Blue Garden.

“That is how she made me disappear.”

Every part of Vivian’s perfect story contained an object that appeared to prove it.

Sophie’s ring beside the remains.

A DNA report.

A death certificate.

A false clinic identity.

Returned letters.

Now a train ticket.

Vivian did not merely tell lies.

She gave people evidence that made truth feel unreasonable.

French police issued a warrant based on fraud, evidence tampering and unlawful confinement.

The fire investigation continued.

At the gallery, Adrian met with the board of the Beaumont Arts Foundation.

Several members defended Vivian.

She had worked with them for years.

She raised money.

She negotiated acquisitions.

She comforted Adrian after Sophie’s death.

One board member spoke carefully.

“Even if this woman is Sophie, we cannot assume Vivian caused everything.”

Sophie stood near the back of the room.

Adrian answered.

“No one is asking you to assume. I am asking you to preserve records and stop destroying evidence.”

The board voted to suspend all Laurent-linked contracts.

A forensic audit began.

Investigators discovered that twenty-three paintings carried false or altered provenance.

The scheme moved almost forty million euros through restoration companies and offshore accounts.

The Blue Garden was central.

Its supposed nineteenth-century history was fabricated.

Sophie discovered that before the fire.

Vivian knew exposure would destroy her career and send several associates to prison.

Sophie was not only an obstacle to Adrian.

She was a witness.

Amélie helped reconstruct the clinic years.

Vivian visited every three months.

After each visit, Sophie’s medication increased.

When Sophie began remembering Chloe, Vivian brought magazines showing Adrian attending public events alone.

“She said he knew where I was,” Sophie recalled.

“She told you Adrian chose not to come?” Amélie asked.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked devastated.

Vivian controlled Sophie with the same lie she used on Chloe.

The people you love know the truth.

They simply do not want you.

That evening, the first DNA report arrived electronically.

Adrian opened it with Sophie beside him.

Chloe waited in the next room with Amélie.

The report stated there was no biological relationship between Sophie and Chloe.

Sophie stared at the words.

“No.”

Adrian reread the laboratory name.

It was the police-supervised hospital.

The chain of custody appeared intact.

Sophie stepped backward.

“No. She is my daughter.”

Adrian did not know what to say.

Sophie searched his face.

“You believe the paper.”

“I believe something is wrong.”

“That is not the same as believing me.”

She ran from the office.

Chloe heard the door close.

“Where did Mommy go?”

Adrian remained motionless.

Marc examined the report.

The document identification number ended in 4817.

The sealed receipt from the hospital ended in 4781.

The numbers had been reversed.

The report was genuine.

But it belonged to a different case.

Someone had switched the electronic files after the samples reached the laboratory.

And only four people had access to the result server.

One of them was Dr. Delacroix’s younger brother.
