Chapter 21 - THE TRUTH IN HER BLOODThe three DNA laboratories issued matching reports.

Sophie Beaumont was Chloe’s biological mother.

Additional genetic comparison confirmed Sophie’s identity beyond dispute.

The French court canceled the false death registration.

For the first time in five years, Sophie’s legal name belonged to her again.

She stood outside the courthouse holding the new identity certificate.

Adrian waited nearby with Chloe.

“How does it feel?” he asked.

“Strange.”

“Good strange?”

“Real things can still feel frightening.”

Chloe took Sophie’s hand.

“Does the paper say you’re Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Can I see?”

Sophie showed her.

Chloe examined the official seal.

“I liked my way better.”

Sophie smiled.

“So did I.”

The criminal investigation uncovered the full conspiracy.

Vivian and Delacroix used Camille to create the appearance that Sophie died.

The fire began when an electrical device was deliberately overloaded near flammable restoration materials.

Vivian claimed she intended only a small controlled incident.

Experts rejected that defense.

She knew people were inside.

She ordered the steel door locked.

After Sophie escaped through the service stairwell and collapsed, Delacroix moved her to the clinic.

Vivian destroyed correspondence, manipulated Adrian and monitored Sophie’s recovery.

For five years, the fraud depended on no one comparing all the separate stories.

Chloe destroyed it with two words.

Mommy. You’re here.

Camille Renard’s death certificate was corrected.

Her remaining cousin attended a private memorial funded by the Beaumont Arts Foundation.

Sophie attended but remained at the back.

Afterward, she placed white flowers beneath Camille’s restored name.

“I’m sorry you disappeared beneath mine,” she whispered.

Camille’s cousin heard.

“You gave it back.”

Sophie shook her head.

“The truth gave it back.”

Vivian’s prosecution attracted international attention.

Adrian refused most interviews.

Sophie gave only one statement.

“Camille Renard was not an unidentified victim. She was a person. My daughter was not confused. She was a child telling the truth.”

The initial false DNA result was formally withdrawn.

Luc Delacroix lost his laboratory position and faced criminal charges.

Maison Sainte-Cécile’s former director was arrested.

Other residents were identified, and several families learned that missing relatives had been held there under false names.

Sophie’s case became part of something larger.

At home, the harder work began.

Chloe wanted Sophie beside her constantly.

If Sophie left a room, the child followed.

If a door closed, Chloe became frightened.

Sophie understood.

She felt the same fear.

Their reunion contained joy, but it also contained five years of separation.

Dr. Isabelle Moreau, a family therapist, helped them create a goodbye ritual.

Whenever Sophie left, she told Chloe where she was going and when she would return.

She touched two fingers to her heart and then to Chloe’s forehead.

Chloe repeated the gesture.

Then she watched Sophie leave without being forced to pretend she was not afraid.

The first time Sophie returned exactly when promised, Chloe cried from relief.

The second time, she smiled.

By the tenth, she continued playing.

Adrian participated too.

He stopped treating Sophie’s presence as proof everything was repaired.

He apologized without asking for immediate forgiveness.

“I should have investigated the letters.”

“Vivian intercepted them.”

“I should have questioned the clinic call.”

“She controlled it.”

“I should have listened when Chloe spoke about the window.”

Sophie looked at him.

“That one is yours.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Truth did not require him to accept blame for Vivian’s crimes.

It required him to recognize the moments he could change.

One evening, Chloe fell asleep between them beneath the unfinished lullaby.

Sophie looked at Adrian.

“What happens to us?”

He did not reach for her.

“We learn who we are now.”

It was not a romantic promise.

It was something more honest.

Then the doorbell rang.

Police delivered Vivian’s final seized property.

Inside was the engagement ring Adrian gave her.

May you like

Beneath it lay Sophie’s original wedding ring.

Vivian had kept both.
