Chapter 18 - FIVE MISSING YEARSAdrian wanted to ignore the message.

Police advised against immediate compliance.
Sophie focused on the final words.
“What truth about Adrian?”
Vivian collected secrets.
Some were real.
Others were manufactured.
Either could cause damage.
At the abandoned clinic, investigators found a video file scheduled for automatic release.
It showed Adrian meeting with insurance representatives after Sophie’s death.
Vivian had edited the conversation.
In the false version, Adrian appeared to ask how quickly he could access Sophie’s estate.
The full recording revealed something different.
Adrian asked how to preserve Sophie’s art foundation for Chloe.
Vivian planned to portray him as financially motivated.
The threat could be disproved.
Police canceled the scheduled release.
But another file was hidden behind encryption.
Its label contained the date of the fire.
Sophie sat inside her former clinic room.
The white walls awakened memories more quickly than any interview.
She remembered Vivian entering after midnight.
She remembered pretending not to recognize her.
Vivian stood beside the bed and said:
“Adrian has Chloe. If you love them, you will remain dead.”
Sophie asked why.
Vivian showed her a photograph of Adrian holding the baby outside the memorial.
“He believes you killed a woman in the fire,” Vivian said. “If you return, police will arrest you and Chloe will grow up visiting a murderer.”
Sophie had been confused and medicated.
She believed enough of it to remain silent.
Months later, she asked to write Adrian.
Vivian allowed it.
Then she collected every letter.
“She wanted me to keep writing,” Sophie whispered.
Amélie nodded.
“So you would believe he ignored you.”
The strategy was crueler than simply destroying the letters.
Each unanswered message deepened Sophie’s certainty that Adrian had chosen life without her.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
“I never knew.”
“I know that now.”
“Does knowing change it?”
“Not immediately.”
They were learning that truth could explain pain without removing it.
Police decrypted the hidden fire-date file.
It contained Vivian’s private diary recordings.
In one, she described Adrian before the fire.
“He looks at Sophie as if intelligence makes her beautiful. He looks through me even when I solve every problem.”
Vivian’s resentment mixed ambition with obsession.
Another entry came after the memorial.
“Adrian leaned on me today. Grief has finally created the space Sophie never would.”
Vivian had not fallen into a relationship by accident.
She cultivated dependence.
She managed Adrian’s schedule, isolated him from friends who questioned her and slowly placed herself inside Chloe’s daily life.
Then came the final recording.
“If Sophie ever returns, Chloe will recognize her. I saw it at the clinic. Blood remembers what reason cannot.”
Vivian had always known Chloe might expose her.
That was why she taught the child to distrust her own memory.
Sophie found one last object beneath the clinic bed.
A drawing Chloe made during the secret visit.
Three women stood in front of a window.
One had red hair.
One had a mask.
One was a small blonde child.
Across the bottom, Chloe’s early handwriting formed two words:
REAL MOMMY.
Vivian had kept the drawing.
Perhaps as a warning.
Perhaps because some part of her could not destroy the proof that Chloe had chosen Sophie.
Police received a new message.
Vivian had entered Galerie Lumière using an old master-access code.
She had triggered the fire-control system and locked the main doors.
The gallery was empty.

And Vivian was threatening to burn it before midnight.
