Chapter 2 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO STOPPEDTwo security guards moved through the crowd.

Sophie rose carefully with Chloe still holding her.
“I’m not going to hurt her.”
“Put the child down,” one guard ordered.
Chloe tightened her arms.
“No!”
Adrian approached.
His confidence had disappeared.
He stared at Sophie’s eyes as if he were searching through five years of grief.
“Who are you?”
Sophie tried to answer.
Her voice failed.
Vivian reached them first.
She grabbed Chloe’s arm.
“Come away from her.”
Chloe screamed.
Sophie immediately protected the child with one hand.
“Don’t pull her.”
Vivian recoiled as if struck.
For one second, the two women faced each other.
Vivian in her designer dress.
Sophie in a cleaning uniform and yellow gloves.
The guests began whispering.
Several raised their phones.
Vivian turned toward security.
“Why are you standing there? Remove her.”
The gallery’s security director, Marc Delon, stepped forward.
“The child is holding her, Madame Laurent.”
“She is confused.”
Chloe looked at Adrian.
“Daddy, tell them to stop.”
Adrian crouched beside her.
“Chloe, do you know this woman?”
“She’s Mommy.”
A murmur moved through the gallery.
Vivian’s voice became sharper.
“Her mother is dead.”
Chloe shook her head.
“No.”
“You were a baby. You don’t remember her.”
“I do.”
“How?”
Chloe pointed to Sophie.
“She called me little bird.”
Adrian looked at the masked woman.
Sophie’s tears slipped above the edge of the surgical mask.
“No one knows that name,” he whispered.
Vivian immediately answered.
“It could have appeared in an old interview. This woman researched the family.”
“It never appeared publicly,” Adrian said.
Vivian’s expression tightened.
Chloe touched Sophie’s cheek through the mask.
“Why are you hiding?”
Sophie stepped backward.
The gallery suddenly felt too bright.
Too full.
Memory arrived in painful fragments.
Smoke.
A metal door.
Vivian’s red hair beneath an emergency light.
A hand removing Sophie’s necklace.
Then darkness.
Chloe looked at Adrian.
“Daddy, why does Mommy wear a mask?”
Every person in the gallery became silent.
Adrian slowly raised one hand.
Sophie flinched.
He stopped.
“I won’t hurt you,” he said.
Those words belonged to strangers, not husbands.
Sophie forced herself to remain still.
Adrian touched the elastic strap behind her ear.
Vivian stepped forward.
“Adrian, don’t.”
He looked at her.
“Why not?”
“Because this is cruel.”
“To whom?”
“To you. To Chloe. This woman is using your grief.”
Sophie stared at Vivian.
“I remember your voice.”
Vivian became still.
“What did you say?”
“I remember you in the fire.”
The guests reacted.
Adrian’s hand remained near the mask.
Vivian tried to smile.
“She is unstable.”
Sophie removed one yellow glove.
Her left hand carried a thin pale scar across the palm.
Adrian recognized it.
Sophie received that scar opening a broken window during their honeymoon in Provence.
He used to kiss it whenever they held hands.
His breathing changed.
He gently lowered the surgical mask.
The left side of Sophie’s face bore healed scars along her jaw and cheek.
But beneath them was the woman he had buried without a body.
The woman whose photograph remained beside his bed for three years.
“Sophie?”
Her name came out as a whisper.
Sophie looked at him.
“I tried to come home.”
Vivian stepped backward.

Her heel struck the edge of a display platform.
For the first time that evening, she looked toward the exits.
