Chapter 20 - CHLOE’S SECOND MEMORYVivian lowered the device.

Only slightly.

The negotiator muted the line to prevent Chloe from speaking again.

Adrian took the phone from his daughter.

“You should not be hearing this.”

Chloe began to cry.

“I wanted to tell Vivian I remember.”

“Remember what?”

“The white room.”

Sophie knelt beside her.

Chloe described more than the window.

Vivian had taken her into Sophie’s room after the curtain closed.

Sophie was asleep.

Vivian lifted Chloe and placed her beside the bed.

“Say goodbye to your mother,” she whispered.

Chloe touched Sophie’s hand.

Sophie woke briefly.

She called her little bird.

Vivian pulled Chloe away.

Later, in the car, Vivian told her the woman was an actress pretending to be Sophie.

“If you tell Daddy,” Vivian said, “he will think you are sick too.”

Chloe buried the memory because keeping it made the adults angry.

The gallery encounter brought it back.

Sophie held her daughter.

“You tried to find me before I could find myself.”

Adrian gave the new statement to police.

Vivian listened through the open line.

Her expression changed from sorrow to panic.

She had not known Chloe remembered entering the room.

That memory placed Vivian directly inside Sophie’s confinement.

“Chloe is confused,” Vivian insisted.

Sophie answered.

“There are clinic entry records.”

Amélie had preserved them.

Vivian signed Chloe in under a false name.

The proof existed.

Vivian pressed the button in her hand.

The gallery lights went dark.

Emergency red lamps activated.

Sophie froze.

For one terrible second, she was back inside the archive.

Smoke.

Steel.

Vivian’s voice.

Adrian caught her shoulders.

“Look at me.”

Sophie forced herself to see him.

“This is not that night,” he said.

Inside the gallery, a mechanical lock released.

Vivian had not triggered a fire.

She had opened the painting-storage vault.

She entered and removed a smaller canvas wrapped in cloth.

Marc recognized it.

A portrait Sophie painted of Chloe as a baby.

It was believed destroyed in the fire.

Vivian carried it into the main room.

“I kept this,” she said.

“Why?” Sophie asked.

Vivian touched the painted child’s face.

“Because it was beautiful.”

The answer contained the tragedy of Vivian Laurent.

She could recognize beauty.

She could preserve a painting.

She could care for a child.

But she turned every beautiful thing into something she had to possess.

Police used the unlocked vault passage to enter the gallery.

Vivian heard movement.

She raised the trigger again.

An officer ordered her to drop it.

She backed toward The Blue Garden.

The silver case remained open on the floor.

Adrian spoke through the phone.

“It’s over.”

Vivian looked at his image on a security monitor.

“It could have been perfect.”

“No,” Adrian said. “It only looked perfect because no one knew the truth.”

Vivian’s hand shook.

Then she looked at Sophie.

“You think Chloe recognized love?”

Sophie held the little girl closer.

“Yes.”

Vivian gave a broken smile.

“She recognized a gesture I taught her to fear.”

She released the device.

It struck the marble.

Police entered and placed her under arrest.

As they led her away beneath the chandeliers, Vivian looked toward the portrait of baby Chloe.

For the first time, she understood that caring for someone did not make them hers.

But understanding arrived years too late.

Inside the silver case, investigators found Camille Renard’s original medical file.

A photograph confirmed Camille’s identity.

Beneath it was a signed statement from Delacroix.
