Chapter 16 - THE SAMPLE THAT WAS SWITCHEDThe school was empty.

Classes had been suspended after the gallery incident.
Vivian entered using forged authorization papers bearing Adrian’s signature.
Security footage showed her walking through Chloe’s classroom.
She placed something inside the child’s desk and left before police arrived.
The object was a sealed envelope addressed to Chloe.
Investigators opened it with Adrian’s permission.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
I was there when you were sick.
I held you when your father could not stop crying.
I chose your dresses, your schools and your birthdays.
She gave birth to you, but I built your life.
The letter ended with a request.
Meet me once. Come without Sophie.
Chloe was five.
Vivian wrote as if a child owed her a hearing.
Sophie read the letter.
Part of it was true.
Vivian had been present during years Sophie lost.
She cared for Chloe after the fire.
She comforted Adrian.
Then she used that care as ownership.
Adrian folded the letter.
“She will never meet Chloe.”
“Vivian expects that answer,” Sophie said.
“You are not suggesting we use our daughter as bait.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“We make Vivian believe Chloe wants to meet her.”
Police created a controlled response through an email address in the letter.
The message appeared to come from Chloe:
Where are you?
Vivian answered within minutes.
She requested a meeting beneath Pont Alexandre III at dawn.
Police prepared surveillance.
No child would attend.
A female officer of similar height wore Chloe’s pink coat from a distance.
Vivian did not appear.
Instead, a courier delivered another envelope.
It contained copies of the first false DNA result and an internal hospital password.
The switched result was traced to Luc Delacroix, the laboratory director’s brother.
Luc was arrested.
He admitted Vivian contacted him before the gallery event.
She had anticipated Adrian would request DNA.
In exchange for money, Luc promised to replace the result.
“How could she anticipate Sophie appearing?” investigators asked.
“She knew Sophie worked at the gallery.”
Vivian invited Chloe to the event deliberately.
The realization shocked everyone.
Vivian did not merely fail to keep them apart.
She placed Chloe near Sophie.
“Why?” Adrian asked.
Sophie understood.
“She wanted to test whether Chloe would recognize me.”
If Chloe ignored the masked cleaner, Vivian could proceed with the marriage.
If Chloe reacted, Vivian planned to remove Sophie and activate the false DNA report.
The stolen first samples created additional confusion.
Vivian had prepared both outcomes.
She underestimated only Chloe’s refusal to release Sophie in front of hundreds of witnesses.
Marc reviewed gallery invitations.
Vivian personally changed Chloe’s attendance status the morning of the event.
She also assigned Sophie to clean the main floor rather than the lower rooms.
The encounter had been staged.
The child’s response had not.
At the apartment, Sophie explained the confirmed DNA result to Chloe.
“The test says what you already knew.”
Chloe smiled.
“Can I call you Mommy now?”
“You called me Mommy before anyone gave permission.”
“Vivian said I shouldn’t.”
Sophie held her.
“Vivian does not decide anymore.”
Adrian stood near them.
The second and third laboratories confirmed the same result.
Sophie Beaumont was Chloe’s biological mother.
Her identity was also verified against Sophie’s parents’ archived medical samples and Adrian’s marriage records.
Legally, the dead woman had returned.
French authorities began the process of canceling the false death certificate.
Then Adrian received a notification from the Beaumont family bank.
Vivian had attempted to access Chloe’s trust fund using an emergency guardianship document.
The form claimed both Adrian and Sophie were dead.

It had been created four years earlier.
Vivian had been preparing to take Chloe long before the gallery encounter.
