Chapter 15 - THE FIRST DNA TESTAdrian ordered the Beaumont mansion locked down.

Chloe remained inside with Sophie, Amélie and armed security.
Sophie objected.
“Vivian will expect Chloe to be there.”
“She will be protected.”
“She entered secure buildings before.”
“Then tell me where you think Chloe should go.”
“Somewhere Vivian does not connect to us.”
Amélie suggested a small family home outside Lyon.
Sophie rejected it because Vivian knew Amélie.
Marc proposed a secured apartment owned by the gallery under a corporate name.
Only four people knew the address.
They moved Chloe before sunset.
Adrian carried her through the underground entrance.
Sophie wore her blue cleaning uniform beneath a dark coat and replaced the surgical mask to avoid recognition.
For the first time, the uniform served as protection rather than invisibility.
A second DNA test was performed inside the apartment by two independent physicians.
Samples were divided between three laboratories.
Marc photographed every seal.
Police supervised transport.
No electronic result would be accepted without direct confirmation.
Chloe watched the adults.
“Does this tell you if she’s Mommy?”
“Yes,” Adrian said.
“I already know.”
Sophie sat beside her.
“Sometimes adults need papers.”
“Why?”
“Because adults forget how to recognize important things.”
Chloe touched Sophie’s bird charm.
“I didn’t forget.”
That night, Sophie remained beside Chloe’s bed.
The child asked about the scar.
Sophie explained that fire injured her.
She did not describe the worst details.
“Did it hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Does it hurt now?”
“Sometimes.”
Chloe kissed the unscarred side.
Then she kissed the scar.
“How about now?”
Sophie smiled through tears.
“Less.”
Adrian watched from the doorway.
The scene was intimate in a way he could not enter.
He had spent five years becoming Chloe’s entire world.
Now he needed to make room without treating Sophie as a visitor or himself as someone replaced.
Sophie looked up.
“You can come in.”
He sat on the other side of the bed.
Chloe placed one hand in each parent’s palm.
For a few minutes, the lost years seemed quiet.
Then the building alarm activated.
Marc entered the apartment.
“Someone used the service elevator.”
Security cameras showed no one inside.
The elevator reached their floor and opened empty.
On its floor rested a red gift box.
Police examined it remotely.
Inside was Chloe’s missing baby bracelet.
Vivian had taken it from the Beaumont home years earlier.
A note accompanied it:
DNA can prove blood. It cannot prove who raised her.
Sophie’s expression hardened.
“This is not about Adrian anymore.”
“What do you mean?” Marc asked.
“Vivian wants Chloe to choose her.”
Adrian looked toward the sleeping child.
Vivian believed motherhood was another position she could acquire through control.
The security team traced the elevator access card.
It belonged to a gallery employee who reported it stolen.
The employee remembered a woman in a surgical mask bumping into her on the Métro.
Vivian was now using Sophie’s disguise.
Police issued a warning.
Any masked woman could be her.
At midnight, one of the laboratories called.
The first independent result was ready.
The probability that Sophie was Chloe’s biological mother exceeded 99.999 percent.

Before relief could settle, a second call arrived.
Vivian had been seen entering Chloe’s school.
