Chapter 16 - THE WILL THEY NEVER SAWCole demanded to know about the will.

Dorothy refused at first.

“It is private.”

“I need to know.”

“No.”

“Mom.”

“Why?”

“Because Jonah—”

“Stop.”

Dorothy’s voice sharpened.

“This is exactly why you don’t need to know.”

Cole’s jaw tightened.

“You’re leaving everything to him.”

“No.”

He stopped.

Dorothy sighed.

She had not intended to discuss it.

But perhaps truth would destroy the fantasy.

“Your father and I wrote our estate plan fifteen years ago.”

Cole stared.

“Long before Sabrina.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“You and Jonah were treated substantially equally.”

Cole’s face changed.

“What?”

“The house was not promised to either of you.”

“But Dad always said—”

“Your father said many things casually. The documents say something else.”

Cole sat.

Dorothy continued.

“Rosehaven could be sold. One of you could buy out the other. I could sell it tomorrow and spend every dollar traveling.”

Cole looked stunned.

“You never intended to cut me out.”

“No.”

“Even after…”

“Before this?”

“Yes.”

Cole covered his face.

Dorothy’s voice softened despite herself.

“You betrayed me because you were afraid I might take away something I had never planned to take.”

He looked up.

“That’s worse.”

May you like

“Yes.”

It was.
