Chapter 22 - JONAH COMES HOMEJonah arrived on a Saturday carrying a cardboard box.

“You left half your kitchen at my place.”

Dorothy laughed.

“I wondered where my blue casserole dish went.”

They hugged.

Cole came downstairs.

Saw Jonah.

His face changed.

Jonah nodded.

“Hey.”

Cole said:

“Happy now?”

Dorothy froze.

Jonah frowned.

“About what?”

“You got what you wanted.”

Jonah looked genuinely confused.

“What exactly did I want?”

“Mom choosing you.”

Dorothy closed her eyes.

Again.

Jonah set down the box.

“I wanted Mom to go home to a house where she was wanted.”

Cole went still.

No raised voice.

No insult.

Just truth.

Jonah continued.

“I don’t want Rosehaven.”

Cole stared.

“I don’t want her money.”

“That’s easy to say.”

Jonah laughed softly.

“I have my own life.”

Cole looked away.

Jonah’s voice softened.

“You should try building yours without waiting for hers to end.”

The sentence landed.

Dorothy looked at Jonah.

Not proud because he had “won.”

There was no competition.

Proud because he had understood what Cole had forgotten.
