Chapter 8 - WHY DOROTHY REALLY LEFTDorothy had not gone to Jonah’s because Rosehaven felt lonely.

She had gone because Rosehaven no longer felt like hers.
The tension began months earlier.
Sabrina changing curtains without asking.
Cole suggesting Dorothy move her desk out of the den because he “needed workspace.”
Wine deliveries arriving addressed to Sabrina.
Contractors appearing to discuss bathroom renovations Dorothy had never requested.
Individually, each event was small.
Together, they created displacement.
Then came the phone call.
Five weeks before Dorothy left, Henry Langford called.
“Did you request a title abstract on Rosehaven?”
Dorothy had been standing in the grocery store.
“No.”
“Did Cole?”
“I don’t know.”
“The title company contacted my office because your name is associated with our firm.”
Dorothy felt cold.
“Why would they request it?”
“Could be refinancing. Sale preparation. Estate planning.”
“I didn’t request anything.”
Henry paused.
“Then I think we should review your authorizations.”
That afternoon Dorothy returned home.
Sabrina and Cole were in the kitchen.
She almost asked.
Almost.
Then she heard Sabrina say:
“If she stayed with Jonah permanently, it solves everything.”
Dorothy stopped outside the doorway.
Cole answered:
“She won’t.”
“Why not?”
“This house is her identity.”
“Then change the identity.”
Dorothy felt something inside her collapse.
Cole said:
“You make it sound easy.”
“It is if you stop asking permission for every little thing.”
Dorothy walked away before they saw her.
That night she called Jonah.
“Can I stay with you for a few weeks?”
His answer came immediately.
“Of course.”
No questions.
The next morning Dorothy told Cole she needed time away.
He looked relieved.
She noticed.
That was when she knew she needed an attorney before she needed a confrontation.
During her stay with Jonah, Henry reviewed everything.
The old limited power of attorney.
House title.
Estate plan.
Accounts.
No illegal transfer had occurred.
No one had sold anything.
Nothing irreversible.
But Henry’s advice was blunt.
“Trust only works when the person holding authority respects the boundary.”
Dorothy asked him to prepare changes.
Not out of revenge.
Protection.
Now she sat in Rosehaven’s sunroom remembering Cole’s words.
Change the identity.
Her identity.
As though sixty-eight meant she could be rewritten.
The envelope in her handbag contained Dorothy’s answer.
