Chapter 1 - THE SHAPE BENEATH THE LIGHT

Daniel Bennett returned to Charlotte shortly after midnight.

He was supposed to remain in Chicago until Friday.

The final meeting ended early, so he changed his flight without telling anyone.

He wanted to surprise his family.

The black car left him outside the multi-million-dollar Bennett mansion.

Warm light glowed behind the tall windows.

The house appeared peaceful.

Daniel carried his black leather travel bag through the side gate.

He had used that entrance since Noah was small.

His son liked to wait near the garden whenever Daniel returned from a trip.

But the backyard was silent.

A wooden fence surrounded the dark lawn.

One warm security light burned near the far corner.

Beneath it stood the old doghouse.

Daniel almost walked past.

Their golden retriever had died two years earlier.

No one had used the doghouse since.

Then something moved inside it.

Daniel stopped.

A small shape was curled beneath an old blanket.

Not a dog.

A child.

Daniel released his travel bag.

It struck the stone path.

The sound made the child move.

A pale face appeared in the doghouse entrance.

Messy dark-brown hair.

Tired brown eyes.

Daniel forgot how to breathe.

“Noah?”

His ten-year-old son opened his eyes.

He wore an oversized faded blue T-shirt, gray sweatpants and worn sneakers.

Dirt covered one sleeve.

His face looked thinner than when Daniel left four days earlier.

Daniel stepped closer.

Noah recognized him.

But instead of crawling out, the boy moved backward into the darkest corner.

His knees pressed against his chest.

His eyes filled with tears.

Daniel stopped immediately.

“It’s Dad.”

Noah pushed farther away.

The movement was instinctive.

Not relief.

Fear.

Daniel lowered himself beside the entrance.

He did not reach inside.

“Noah, what are you doing out here?”

The boy remained silent.

Daniel looked toward the mansion.

Every downstairs light was on.

Warmth.

Food.

Soft furniture.

Only yards away, his son was curled inside a wooden box under a security light.

Daniel turned back.

“Are you hurt?”

Noah shook his head.

The movement was too fast.

A frightened answer, not an honest one.

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“Who did this to you?”

Noah slowly raised one hand.

His fingers were stiff from the cold.

He pointed toward the glowing mansion.

Daniel followed the direction of his hand.

The kitchen lights went out.

Then an upstairs curtain moved.

Someone inside had seen him.

Daniel stood.

His heartbreak hardened into controlled anger.

He looked at Noah again.

“I’m not leaving you here.”

The boy whispered his first words.

“She said you wanted me outside.”

Daniel became completely still.

“Who said that?”

The back door opened.

Claire Bennett stepped onto the patio.

She wore a cream designer blouse, tailored black trousers and luxury heels.

Her face was pale.

“Daniel?”

She looked at the travel bag on the ground.

Then at the doghouse.

“You came home early.”
