Chapter 19 - THE SECOND NIGHT RECORDED

The recovered video began at 11:42 p.m.
Noah stood barefoot on the patio.
Claire held his worn sneakers.
Everett carried the black leather travel bag.
“Where is the ledger?” Claire asked.
Noah remained silent.
She played Daniel’s voicemail.
Do whatever is necessary.
Noah shook his head.
“He didn’t mean outside.”
Claire raised the residential authorization.
“He signed this too.”
Everett searched the doghouse.
He found Rachel’s silver star and placed it inside his pocket.
Noah reached for it.
Everett pushed his hand away.
Noah grabbed the small garden rake.
He struck Everett’s forearm.
The tool fell immediately.
Everett seized Noah.
Claire opened the doghouse.
The boy fought.
He called for Daniel.
They forced him inside.
Everett wrapped the cord through the handles.
Claire tightened it.
Then she knelt near the entrance.
“You will stay here until you understand that your father chose his new family.”
Noah cried.
“I’m his family.”
Claire’s face became expressionless.
“Not the part he wants.”
She and Everett walked toward the mansion.
Noah called after them.
Claire turned back once.
She switched on the exterior security light.
Then she entered the warm house.
The video continued.
Noah’s crying became quieter.
Rain began shortly after midnight.
Water entered through a crack in the doghouse roof.
At 2:14 a.m., Noah stopped calling for help.
At 5:32, Claire returned.
She opened the latch.
She placed crackers and water near the entrance.
Then she warned him not to mention the doghouse during Daniel’s scheduled call.
The recovered file lasted forty-seven minutes because motion compression removed long periods of stillness.
It contained enough.
The court viewed it privately.
Claire’s attorney withdrew his claim that the doghouse was voluntary.
Prosecutors added unlawful restraint and aggravated child endangerment charges.
Daniel watched only once.
Afterward, he went to the bathroom and became physically ill.
Noah chose not to watch.
Julia told him he never needed to see it.
“The recording belongs to the case,” she said. “The memory already belongs to you. You do not owe anyone another viewing.”
At Marisol’s apartment, Daniel asked Noah what he wanted done with the doghouse.
“Burn it,” Daniel suggested.
Noah shook his head.
“Why?”
“I want the judge to see how small it is.”
May you like
Daniel understood.
The doghouse would remain intact until Noah no longer needed it to prove what happened.
