Chapter 17 - THE MAN AT THE BACK GATE

Everett Sloan agreed to testify.

In exchange, prosecutors would consider a reduced fraud sentence.

He described the night of the missing forty-seven minutes.

Noah found Claire’s ledger.

Everett came to retrieve it.

Noah refused to reveal its location.

Everett searched the boy’s room.

Then the doghouse.

He found nothing.

Claire played Daniel’s message.

Noah still refused.

Everett claimed the boy attacked him with a garden tool.

“That is what Claire means,” Everett said.

“Where were you injured?” Detective Cole asked.

Everett pointed toward a faint scar on his forearm.

Police examined the garden tool.

Noah’s fingerprints were present.

So were traces of Everett’s blood.

The claim threatened to support Claire’s story of aggression.

Julia Mercer asked Noah privately.

The boy shut down.

He touched his neck.

His breathing became shallow.

Julia stopped the interview.

Daniel learned about the tool from his attorney.

He did not ask Noah.

He waited.

That evening, Noah drew the back gate.

Everett stood near it.

A long shape appeared in his hand.

Not a garden tool.

A cord.

“What happened?” Daniel asked gently.

Noah placed the pencil down.

“He put it around the doghouse handles.”

“Did you hit him?”

Noah nodded.

“With the small rake.”

“Why?”

“He was closing it.”

“Were you inside?”

“No.”

The missing context changed everything.

Noah struck Everett’s arm while trying to prevent himself from being locked in.

Everett grabbed him.

Claire opened the doghouse.

Together, they forced Noah inside.

The rake fell near the fence.

Noah had not attacked without cause.

He had resisted confinement.

Detective Cole confronted Everett.

The emergency light’s motion data supported Noah.

Everett approached the doghouse with the cord before Noah touched the rake.

Everett changed his statement.

He claimed Claire ordered him.

“Did she force you to grab him?”

“No.”

“Did she force you to tie the handles?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Everett looked toward the interview-room mirror.

“Because he had evidence that could destroy us.”

Daniel listened from the observation room.

The answer contained no shame.

Only self-preservation.

Everett described Claire tightening the cord.

Noah cried for his father.

Claire said Daniel was already tired of him.

Then they went inside.

They left the security light on.

May you like

Not for Noah.

So the camera would alert Claire if he escaped.
