Chapter 10 - THE SECURITY LIGHT

Everett Sloan’s company existed only on paper.

It had no employees.

No equipment.

No completed projects.

Yet it received more than one million dollars from Noah’s trust and Daniel’s company.

Claire approved the invoices.

Daniel’s signatures released the funds.

Everett withdrew them.

Detective Cole found photographs of Claire and Everett meeting at restaurants during Daniel’s trips.

They were not only financial partners.

They had remained personally involved.

Daniel stared at the images.

Claire had not merely built a life around his absence.

She built another relationship inside it.

The security light became the strongest potential witness.

Its internal camera faced the doghouse.

Claire deleted the local recordings.

The manufacturer stored motion alerts in a cloud account.

Daniel’s administrator password had been changed.

Police obtained a warrant.

The account opened.

Hundreds of thumbnails appeared.

Claire approaching the doghouse.

Noah crawling inside.

Everett standing near the fence.

Food placed outside.

Food removed untouched.

But when technicians opened the video files, most were blank.

Someone had overwritten them.

One clip survived.

It showed Claire locking the latch.

The file ended after four seconds.

Her face remained outside the camera angle.

Only the cream blouse and black trousers were visible.

Claire’s attorney claimed it could be anyone.

Then Marisol remembered the exterior light had an audio sensitivity setting.

Even if the video was overwritten, motion alerts might preserve short audio previews.

Technicians searched the notification archive.

The first alert contained a door closing.

The second contained Noah asking to come inside.

The third contained Claire.

Your father said you need consequences.

Daniel looked toward his son.

Noah sat across the room, holding Rachel’s silver star.

The recording proved Claire used Daniel’s name.

But it did not reveal why the punishment continued for twenty nights.

A later preview provided the answer.

Everett’s voice:

If he tells Daniel about the account, we both go to prison.

Claire:

He won’t tell Daniel anything. By the time Daniel returns, Noah will be inside a treatment center.

Everett:

And the trust?

Claire:

Daniel already signed the first authorization.

The audio ended.

Daniel requested copies of every document Claire sent during his trip.

One form was labeled household liability insurance.

Beneath the visible page was a second electronic layer.

It authorized Claire to place Noah into residential psychiatric care.

Daniel’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Claire had not only convinced Noah that his father wanted him punished.

She had obtained a document that appeared to prove it.
