Chapter 9 - THE HOUSEKEEPER AT THE GATE

Marisol worked for the Bennett family for six years.
She knew Noah before Rachel died.
She stayed after Daniel married Claire.
At first, Claire was affectionate toward the boy.
That changed whenever Daniel traveled.
Meals became separate.
Doors became locked.
Noah was blamed for broken objects Marisol never saw him touch.
“I told myself she was strict,” Marisol said.
“Why?” Daniel asked.
“Because strict was easier to believe.”
Two months earlier, Marisol found Noah asleep on the kitchen floor before sunrise.
His clothes were damp.
Claire said he wet his bed.
Marisol later found mud inside the doghouse.
She confronted Claire.
Claire fired her.
Before leaving, Marisol discovered Noah’s phone inside a laundry basket.
Claire had smashed the screen.
Marisol took it.
“I wanted to give it to police.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Mrs. Bennett said you knew everything.”
Daniel looked toward Noah.
He had believed the same lie.
A technician repaired the phone.
There were no recent outgoing calls.
Claire blocked Daniel’s number.
She also blocked the school and Marisol.
But Noah had recorded voice messages without sending them.
The first was from three weeks earlier.
“Dad, I don’t know if you get these.”
His voice was soft.
“Claire says you don’t want me calling during work.”
The second recording contained crying.
“I’m sorry I looked at the papers.”
The third was made inside the doghouse.
The sound of rain struck the wooden roof.
“Dad, she said you chose her.”
Daniel stopped the playback.
He walked into the hallway.
For several minutes, he could not return.
When he did, Noah was sitting beside Marisol.
The repaired phone rested between them.
“Did you listen?” Noah asked.
“Yes.”
“All of them?”
“Not yet.”
“Why not?”
“Because I needed a minute.”
Noah looked frightened.
“Are you mad?”
“No.”
Daniel knelt.
“I’m ashamed.”
The boy did not understand the difference.
Daniel would have to show him over time.
The final file contained another voice.
Claire stood outside the doghouse.
“Tell me where the blue folder is.”
Noah refused.
A man spoke behind her.
“He saw the transfers. This has gone too far.”
Claire answered:
“Then make sure Daniel signs the treatment papers before he comes home.”
Marisol recognized the man.
