Chapter 13 - THE PHONE CLAIRE TOOK

Technicians recovered more data from Noah’s damaged phone.

Claire had not only blocked calls.

She created false replies using Daniel’s contact name.

Noah sent:

Dad, can I call you?

Claire answered from a linked device:

Not now. Listen to Claire.

Another message:

She made me sleep outside.

The false response:

Then you must have done something serious.

Noah believed Daniel wrote every word.

Daniel read them in silence.

Claire had used his photograph.

His name.

His ordinary style of texting.

Short sentences because Daniel was always busy.

The deception worked because it resembled him.

One final conversation was recovered.

Noah:

Do you still want me?

False Daniel:

I want a son who behaves.

Noah did not send another message after that.

Daniel placed the phone down.

He remembered Noah backing into the doghouse corner.

The fear had not begun with the latch.

It began on the screen.

Claire was arrested for identity misuse, fraud and child endangerment.

Her attorney secured temporary release.

She denied writing the messages.

The linked device was missing.

Police traced its final signal to Everett’s black vehicle.

Then Everett crossed into South Carolina.

Highway cameras followed him to a motel.

Officers arrested him before sunrise.

Inside his vehicle, they found the linked tablet.

Claire’s fingerprints covered it.

The message history remained.

Everett requested a lawyer.

Later, he offered cooperation.

He claimed Claire designed the fraud.

He only created invoices.

“She said Daniel never read anything.”

“Did you threaten Noah?” Detective Cole asked.

Everett looked away.

“The kid took records.”

“Did you lock him inside the doghouse?”

“Claire handled discipline.”

“Did you search him?”

Silence.

Police found Noah’s blue thread inside Everett’s work jacket.

It matched the faded T-shirt Noah wore during the missing forty-seven minutes.

Everett’s attorney ended the interview.

Daniel returned to Marisol’s apartment.

Noah was awake.

“Did you find the fake messages?”

“Yes.”

The boy watched him.

“Were any of them really you?”

Daniel opened his own phone.

He showed Noah the complete travel history.

Claire had deleted Noah’s messages before they reached him.

“None of those replies were mine.”

Noah’s eyes filled.

“That’s good.”

Daniel moved closer.

“Is it?”

The boy nodded.

Then his expression changed.

“But you still didn’t call me.”

Daniel did not defend himself.

“No.”

May you like

The truth did not release him.

It showed him where his responsibility began.
