Chapter 14 - LILY WASN’T THE FIRST CHILD MARLENE THREATENEDLily’s former nanny, Jessica Ward, contacted Daniel after news of protective order reached household network.

Jessica had left abruptly a year earlier.
Marlene told Daniel:
“She was unreliable.”
Jessica said:
“I was fired.”
“Why?”
“I told your mother I would tell you she was locking Lily in study during conference calls.”
Daniel froze.
“Locking?”
“Not key-lock. She’d sit outside and tell Lily she couldn’t leave until homework done.”
“Lily cried.”
“I said too strict.”
Not severe abuse alone, but control.
Then Jessica saw Marlene taking letters from Daniel desk and asked.
Marlene:
“Not your concern.”
Jessica later witnessed Marlene tell Lily:
“If you upset your father, he could get sick again.”
That terrified child.
Jessica objected.
Marlene fired next day.
Why didn’t Jessica tell Daniel?
She emailed.
Daniel never saw.
Household email assistant routed through Marlene? Yes.
Jessica also called Daniel office.
Message left with executive assistant, who forwarded to Marlene because “home staffing.”
Gatekeeping.
She thought Daniel knew.
Daniel apologized.
Jessica:
“I should have done more.”
“Maybe.”
“But you tried.”
Same pattern.
Then a school tutor Priya Desai recalled Lily saying Grandma told her not talk about Daddy sleeping.
Priya documented with school counselor.
No one suspected.
These records predate current conflict, strong corroboration.
Marlene had been controlling child narrative.
Not physically harmful often.
Psychological.
Then another child? Title says Lily wasn’t first child Marlene threatened. Could refer Daniel as child.
Better stronger: Daniel remembers his own childhood.
When he was twelve, Marlene told:
“If you tell your father about my bank problem, you’ll break family.”
She used secrecy.
Maybe "first child" is Daniel. This is emotionally powerful and avoids extra victim.
Jessica's info plus Daniel memory.
His father, Richard Prescott, had temper. Marlene hid debt.
She told young Daniel:
“Do not tell Dad.”
When Daniel accidentally mentioned, parents fought.
Marlene blamed:
“See what talking does?”
Daniel learned keep.
As adult, she repeated with Lily.
Intergenerational.
He realized why threats worked on him too.
Marlene had trained loyalty = silence since childhood.
Therapist:
“You normalized.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca challenged.
Daniel defended mother:
“That’s how she is.”
Now Lily paid.
He felt guilt.
But repair.
He told Lily:
“When I was kid, Grandma also told me family secrets shouldn’t leave house.”
“Did you listen?”
“Yes.”
“Was that wrong?”
“Sometimes.”
“What secrets can I tell?”
“Anything that makes you scared, hurt, confused.”
“To who?”
“Me, teacher, doctor, Aunt Claire.”
He built network.
No secrecy monopoly.
Marlene’s family court argument:
Daniel coaching anti-grandmother.
Therapist testified safety education standard.
Court agreed.
Then Jessica asked see Lily? Lily remembered fondly.
They met park.
Lily:
“Why you left?”
Jessica:
“Grown-up disagreement.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t say goodbye.”
Marlene told Lily Jessica didn't care.
Another lie.
Lily’s worldview:
“Grandma says everyone leaves.”
Daniel:
“Some people were pushed away.”
But don't poison.
He carefully.
The first child Marlene threatened was perhaps Daniel decades earlier.
Not same intensity.
