“DAD… CHECK HER BAG” / Chapter 5 / 25

Chapter 5 - THE FIRST THING INSIDEThe first evidentiary report confirmed medication.

Daniel’s prescriptions:

zolpidem? Could avoid specific names to not give misuse details. Just sedating sleep medication and anti-anxiety medication prescribed as needed.

Rebecca’s:

pain/nausea meds from cancer treatment, some controlled, most expired.

Why Marlene kept?

She claimed she gathered after Rebecca death for disposal and forgot.

Three years.

Possible but weak.

Daniel’s medication had recent refill dates.

Pharmacy records:

Marlene picked up two on his behalf using family authorization.

Daniel didn’t recall authorizing those pickups, but old household health form allowed.

He never received full bottles.

Instead, Marlene kept.

One refill coincided with period Daniel told doctor he was “running out too quickly.”

Doctor warned him.

Daniel had been confused.

Now inventory suggested Marlene retained substantial pills separately.

Could she have administered without knowledge.

Camera says yes at least several instances.

Blood tests from past unavailable.

No proof exact quantities.

Prosecutor warned:

“We can establish unauthorized administration in some clips if testimony supports, but don’t assume every foggy night came from her.”

Daniel appreciated.

Truth not speculation.

His grief and occasional alcohol genuinely affected memory too.

Marlene exploited existing vulnerability.

She didn’t create all.

That made believable.

Lily’s statement corroborated.

Then Rebecca’s medication.

One bottle label months before death.

Inside were not original pills.

Forensic lab found documents? Maybe bottle used as hiding container for small USB? Wait key props. Could be symbolic. But outline says some bottles belong Rebecca. Keep simply retained.

Why keep?

Marlene used Rebecca illness narrative:

“She was heavily medicated, unreliable.”

Having meds not evidence.

But letter.

Rebecca wrote:

Daniel, your mother has started asking me to sign changes to Lily’s trust. I said no. She keeps telling me you already agreed. Please ask me directly before you believe anything she says I authorized.

Daniel read.

He had never seen.

Next paragraph:

She also keeps telling me you are too tired to deal with this. I do not want Marlene managing Lily’s inheritance. I want an independent trustee.

Julian? No. Rebecca.

Daniel covered face.

Rebecca had tried.

Trust originally created at Lily birth by Rebecca’s father? Let's establish Rebecca inherited family shares, placed in trust.

Value currently $6.8m? Outline missing money $470k. Could be trust around $8.4m. Let's choose $8.7m. Enough.

Rebecca came from successful architect family maybe.

After death, Lily trust held life insurance, inheritance, investment account. Daniel co-trustee with independent bank? Marlene had advisory role? Let's define:

Daniel trustee; Easton Fiduciary co-trustee for principal. Marlene had limited family expense authorization through Daniel’s POA when he impaired.

This allowed some transfers.

Rebecca wanted Marlene nowhere.

But after death, Daniel in grief signed? Maybe Marlene gained financial-agent authority, then used reimbursement claims.

Daniel didn’t fully understand.

Rebecca letter continued:

If anything happens to me, don’t let grief make you hand everything to someone else just because she says she’s helping.

Daniel cried.

Not because Rebecca predicted conspiracy exactly.

Because she knew him.

He had handed.

Marlene.

Then final:

Your mother loves you. That is not same thing as giving her control.

That sentence stayed.

People can love and control.

Daniel began separating.

Marlene maybe truly cared for him.

Made soup.

Held him at funeral.

Took Lily to school.

Stayed nights.

Those good acts made later abuse possible because trust.

Not all kindness fake.

That complexity hurt.

Detective Vance said:

“People often ask whether someone loved victim.”

“It’s not useful.”

“Ask what they did.”

Daniel nodded.

What Marlene did:

secretly dosed.

withheld letter.

held Lily down.

managed money.

prepared guardianship.

Facts.

First thing inside bag was medication.

But the more dangerous thing was story Marlene built around it:

Daniel was unstable.

Daniel forgot.

May you like

Daniel needed mother.

Now Daniel had to learn which parts of story were true, which were manipulated, and which had been invented entirely.
