Chapter 6 - THE MEDICINE DANIEL THOUGHT HE LOSTDaniel had once accused himself of being irresponsible.

Sixteen months after Rebecca’s death, he told therapist:
“I keep losing prescriptions.”
His therapist asked:
“Are you taking more than directed?”
“I don’t think.”
“Think?”
Daniel hated uncertainty.
He started using pill organizer.
Marlene mocked gently:
“You’re eighty now.”
Then organizer disappeared.
Marlene found three days later in laundry room.
Daniel accepted.
Now he wondered.
Security footage search showed Marlene entering Daniel bedroom several times while he traveled.
Normal? She lived partially, helped.
One clip:
she opened nightstand, removed pill organizer.
Later footage laundry room? No camera.
Cannot prove plant.
But suspicious.
Investigators refused infer without evidence.
Good.
Marlene’s journals in lockbox included:
D confused about meds again. Important.
Important for what?
Guardianship pattern.
Another:
D slept through 8am call after tea.
She knew why.
That was stronger.
Another:
D angry when told he forgot conversation.
No recording conversation.
Daniel started seeing journal not caregiving notes, but dossier.
Nathan:
“She may claim she documented genuine decline.”
Daniel:
“Then why hide?”
Exactly.
Marlene had even sent selected notes to Charles Danner.
If needed, establishes incapacity.
Need for what.
Financial authority.
Daniel’s business:
Prescott Development Group, real estate/infrastructure worth significant. He held controlling interest.
Rebecca death gave him depression. Marlene worried he might sell family assets, perhaps.
She had inherited minority 8% from late husband and believed Daniel was steward.
If Daniel judged incapacitated, POA could let Marlene vote certain shares and manage household trusts temporarily.
She wanted control.
Why?
Maybe she feared Daniel’s planned sale of legacy headquarters. Add later.
Lily trust separate.
The medicine helped create incapacity case.
Daniel’s own doctor, Dr. Joseph Rainer, met with investigators.
“Did you diagnose Daniel substance disorder?”
“No.”
“Cognitive impairment?”
“No.”
“Did Marlene report concerns?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
Memory lapses, insomnia, drinking.
“Did she ask whether he could manage finances?”
“Several times.”
“What did you say?”
“That grief can temporarily impair concentration but I had no basis to declare incapacity.”
Marlene later told Daniel:
“Dr. Rainer thinks you shouldn’t handle big decisions.”
Misrepresentation.
Daniel remembered canceling planned business acquisition because mother said doctor worried.
How much had her narrative altered company?
Not necessarily theft.
Control.
Then hospital record from one night Daniel fainted? Maybe medication + alcohol interaction. This could be dangerous. Avoid too detailed. He had collapsed after combining prescribed med unknowingly with wine at dinner. Marlene called ambulance. He blamed himself.
Now possibility she dosed tea while he drank.
Camera that evening:
Marlene added crushed medication before dinner.
Daniel later poured single glass wine.
He didn't know med already.
Hospital tox screen showed expected sedative plus alcohol.
Doctors warned.
Marlene later said:
“You could have died because you’re careless.”
Daniel cried when realized.
She had used consequence of her act to shame him.
Did she intend overdose?
No evidence.
Likely expected normal dose, didn't know wine? She saw maybe. Still reckless.
Prosecutor:
“Do not call attempted poisoning.”
“Evidence supports unauthorized administration, not intent serious harm.”
Daniel agreed.
He did not need exaggeration.
She secretly gave.
Enough.
Lily heard parents? She wasn't there that night maybe.
Daniel’s anger moved.
He wanted scream at Marlene.
Nathan advised no contact.
Instead Daniel wrote unsent:
You made me afraid of myself.
That was core.
Not medication alone.
Fear.
Then he looked at daughter.
Marlene had begun same.
“If you tell, Dad won’t believe.”
“If you speak, bad things happen.”
Daniel recognized pattern.
Silence through self-doubt.
He would break with Lily first.
He told her:
“If I ever say something that scares you or seems wrong, you can tell another safe adult too.”
Lily:
“Even about you?”
“Yes.”
That surprised.
“Even me.”
No family secrecy.
The medicine Daniel thought he lost had been in mother’s bag.
May you like
But what he had truly lost was confidence in own memory.
And recovering that would take longer than recovering pills.
