“DAD… CHECK HER BAG” / Chapter 21 / 25

Chapter 21 - THE GRANDMOTHER WHO SAID SHE WAS PROTECTING THE FAMILYMarlene finally agreed to mediated session before plea negotiations.

Daniel attended with Nathan.

No Lily.

Marlene looked smaller.

Not physically dramatically.

Without handbag maybe.

She began:

“Everything I did was to keep family together.”

Daniel almost laughed.

Instead:

“Define family.”

“You.”

“Lily.”

“Prescott legacy.”

“Rebecca?”

Marlene’s face tightened.

“Rebecca was family.”

“Then why forge her?”

“I’ve apologized.”

“No. You’ve explained.”

Difference.

Marlene cried.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Losing you after she died.”

“You had me.”

“No. You were disappearing.”

“I was grieving.”

“You drank.”

“You forgot Lily.”

“You wanted sell company.”

“You wanted me out.”

There.

Her fear list.

Daniel:

“So you made sure I couldn’t function without you.”

“I helped.”

“You put medication in my tea.”

“You needed sleep.”

“You hid letters.”

“She was turning you against me.”

“You took Lily money.”

“I used for family.”

“You prepared custody petition.”

“You were unstable.”

“And when I became stable?”

Marlene looked away.

Daniel leaned.

“When did you stop preparing?”

No answer.

Never.

She kept because control.

Then:

“You threatened Lily.”

Marlene sobbed.

“I panicked.”

“She saw bag.”

“I knew she’d misunderstand.”

“She understood enough.”

“I never meant harm.”

“You covered mouth.”

“She was screaming.”

“Because you grabbed her.”

Silence.

Daniel's line:

“You threatened my daughter to keep control.”

Marlene cried:

“I love her.”

“I believe.”

She looked surprised.

Daniel continued:

“And protection doesn’t require people to be afraid of you.”

There.

“You made both of us afraid.”

“Me of my own memory.”

“Lily of her own voice.”

Marlene collapsed emotionally.

“I don’t know who I am if I’m not needed.”

Honest root.

Daniel softened but boundary.

“Then you need figure out without using us.”

He didn't hug.

Session ended.

This admission later influenced plea:

Marlene accepted partial responsibility.

She pleaded to financial exploitation/forgery, unlawful medication administration, and child intimidation-related offense? Could specify later.

Her attorney negotiated.

Daniel did not request maximum.

He submitted impact.

He did request:

restitution,

no fiduciary control,

no unsupervised Lily until clinicians/court,

no direct financial access,

truthful acknowledgment.

Justice.

Marlene said:

“You want take everything.”

Daniel:

“No.”

“You keep your money, home after settlement, friends, life.”

“You don’t keep control of mine.”

Key.

Not destruction.

She still had substantial retirement/dividends.

Condo sale restitution.

Not poor.

What she lost:

authority,

trust,

role.

That hurt more.

Marlene's “protecting family” became exposed phrase.

She had protected image/control.

Maybe she believed family.

But methods invalid.

Daniel later told Lily:

“Grandma says she thought she was helping.”

“Was she?”

“Sometimes she helped.”

“Sometimes she hurt.”

“Both can be true.”

Lily:

“Can she get better?”

“I hope.”

“Do I have to see?”

May you like

“No.”

Good.
