Chapter 4 - THE BAG IS SEALEDThe police sealed the bag as evidence.

That angered Marlene more than being removed from Daniel’s house.
Her attorney demanded return of personal belongings unrelated.
Authorities inventoried and returned wallet, cosmetics, keys not relevant.
But medication, documents, USB, letter, brass key remained.
Marlene called Daniel once before he blocked direct contact.
“You have turned your daughter against me.”
“No.”
“Rebecca did this.”
Daniel stopped.
“What?”
“Rebecca poisoned you against me before she died.”
Daniel’s voice changed.
“You had a letter she wrote me.”
“She was irrational.”
“So you decided I shouldn’t read?”
“I protected you.”
“From my wife?”
“She was dying and terrified.”
“That wasn’t your choice.”
“She accused everyone.”
“Maybe because something was happening.”
Silence.
Then Marlene:
“You were falling apart.”
Daniel:
“And you drugged my tea?”
“I gave you medication your doctor prescribed.”
“Without telling me.”
“You wouldn’t sleep.”
“At seven in evening before meetings?”
She stopped.
He had timestamps.
“Daniel, grief made you dangerous.”
“To whom?”
“Yourself.”
“Your business.”
“Lily.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
This was narrative.
Unstable father.
He remembered Marlene saying in those years:
“You can’t drive tonight.”
“Don’t sign that.”
“Let me call attorney.”
“You forgot again.”
“You yelled yesterday.”
Some true.
He had struggled.
But had she amplified?
Then she said:
“You signed power of attorney because you knew.”
Daniel:
“I don’t remember.”
“Exactly.”
Weapon.
He almost fell into.
Then realized.
“My lack of memory after you gave medication does not prove consent.”
Marlene hung up.
Nathan later said:
“Do not argue facts with her by phone.”
Daniel nodded.
He had wanted mother to explain.
But every explanation shifted reality.
Evidence safer.
The bag itself became center.
USB encrypted.
Investigators obtained warrant/search authority.
Digital forensics.
Inside:
financial spreadsheets,
scanned signatures,
trust statements,
emails,
draft guardianship documents.
But not yet full reveal to Daniel until analyzed.
The brass key fit no obvious lock in house.
Lily said closet.
Marlene owned townhouse in Beacon Hill and kept guest suite at Daniel’s home.
Police/legal counsel sought.
Because Lily described box in Marlene’s closet at Prescott house? Let's make Marlene had private locked cabinet in guest suite still in Daniel-owned property. Easier. Brass key opened lockbox inside her guest wardrobe.
Daniel authorized search of his own home with police.
Inside:
Letters.
Rebecca to Daniel.
Rebecca to attorney.
Trust records.
A second original power of attorney.
Bank statements.
Copies of Lily’s trust withdrawals.
And draft petition:
IN RE: TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP OF LILY PRESCOTT
Daniel stared.
Nathan said:
“We’re not there yet.”
But there it was.
His mother had prepared to ask court for custody of Lily.
Grounds:
Daniel’s “substance misuse.”
“Cognitive lapses.”
“Unstable grief.”
“Financial recklessness.”
Daniel sat.
“Substance misuse?”
Nathan:
“They may characterize medication and alcohol.”
“I drank.”
“How much?”
“Too much for a few months.”
“Never around Lily alone drunk.”
“I stopped.”
“Records?”
Therapy.
Doctor.
No DUIs.
No neglect.
Marlene had documented every low point.
Diary:
Daniel forgot pickup once.
Daniel slept through breakfast.
Daniel missed board call.
Daniel yelled.
Daniel mixed dates.
Real grief moments.
But combined with secret medication.
It created case.
Nathan:
“Draft isn’t filing.”
“No.”
“But why prepare?”
Daniel knew.
Control.
If he resisted POA or financial changes, guardianship threat.
Maybe.
Need prove.
Then detectives found email on USB:
From Marlene to attorney Charles Danner, not Nathan.
If Daniel attempts to remove me from Lily’s trust oversight, we need be ready to show pattern.
Pattern.
This wasn't simply concern for granddaughter.
It was leverage.
The bag was sealed physically.
But its contents had opened something far larger.
May you like
Daniel thought threat was about what Lily saw that afternoon.
Now it looked like Marlene had been preparing for years.
