**The Second Witness**

Lily was brought back to the mall.

Daniel asked her to identify exactly where she had been standing.

She pointed toward the ice cream cart.

"Here."

"What did you see?"

"Sophia pushed Emily."

Daniel nodded.

"Did you see anyone else?"

Lily thought carefully.

Then she pointed toward the opposite corridor.

"A man."

Daniel's attention sharpened.

"What man?"

"He had a black hat."

"Did he talk to Sophia?"

"No."

"What did he do?"

Lily frowned.

"He was holding something."

"What?"

"A phone."

Daniel showed her several photographs.

Lily pointed immediately.

"That's him."

The man in the photograph.

Mark Ellis.

The missing security contractor.

Daniel stood.

"Are you certain?"

Lily nodded.

"He looked at the camera."

Then she added something that changed the case.

"He wasn't watching Sophia."

Daniel waited.

"He was watching the pregnant lady."

That evening, detectives searched Mark Ellis's apartment.

They found dozens of photographs.

Emily leaving her house.

Emily entering restaurants.

Emily shopping.

Emily walking with her husband.

Someone had been tracking her for weeks.

But one photograph stood out.

It showed Emily holding the same envelope Daniel had found in her
house.

The photograph had been taken two days before the envelope arrived.

Daniel stared at it.

Someone had known about the envelope before Emily received it.

Which meant the envelope wasn't a warning.

It was bait.
