Chapter 12 - THE LETTER ADRIAN’S WIFE HIDLaura’s red folder was found beneath the floor of Emma’s playroom.
My wife had hidden it there before her death.
A note on the outside read:
Adrian searches offices. Malcolm searches safes. Neither thinks to search beneath a child’s castle.
Emma owned a large wooden dollhouse shaped like the mansion.
Under its removable foundation lay the folder.
Laura had designed her own hiding place.
Inside was a letter to me.
Adrian,
Your father believed a family name could be protected by containing the truth.
Malcolm believes the name gives him permission to own it.
Victor believes guilt becomes morality if he waits long enough to confess.
I do not know what you will believe.
I hope you choose the people whose names never appeared on the building.
She listed pension beneficiaries.
Families.
Addresses.
Medical debts.
Foreclosures.
One couple delayed retirement for eleven years because their benefit was reduced.
A widow lost the payment intended after her husband’s death.
These were the people my family’s private resolution had failed.
Laura also described the protected trust.
She funded it with shares inherited from her parents.
The trust could cover initial restitution and legal expenses.
Emma was named only as the future family representative after age thirty.
Not as the owner.
Malcolm had misunderstood the document.
He believed Emma would personally control money he considered part of the Whitmore fortune.
That was why her name mattered.
Laura’s final page contained a map of the study.
The safe had two hidden compartments.
We found one.
The second was not behind the steel panel.
It was beneath the safe itself.
Marcus and federal technicians removed the lower frame.
A narrow black case was secured inside the wall.
The original ledger lay within it.
The book Aaron stole had been a duplicate.
My father created two versions.
One documented transactions.
The other included private notes explaining why.

Malcolm had taken the wrong book.
The true ledger had never left the mansion.
