Chapter 17 - THE TRAITOR INSIDE SECURITYSamuel admitted entering the mansion after Laura’s death.

He removed files.

Changed security archives.

Monitored Victor.

He denied harming Laura physically.

Then investigators found payments to a private nurse who worked during Laura’s final illness.

The nurse had altered medication logs.

Laura died from complications of an autoimmune condition.

Reviewers found evidence that a prescribed dose had been withheld repeatedly.

Whether those omissions caused her death required medical analysis.

Samuel claimed Malcolm wanted Laura confused and unable to continue the pension investigation.

The nurse claimed she misunderstood instructions.

Malcolm denied everything.

I wanted certainty.

The law offered evidence and probability.

A person could be responsible for creating danger without a simple confession tying every moment together.

Medical experts concluded the altered care substantially increased Laura’s risk and likely accelerated her decline.

That finding became part of the case.

It could not give Emma her mother back.

I struggled with how much to tell her.

A therapist helped.

“Some adults made unsafe choices while Mom was sick,” I said. “People are investigating those choices.”

“Did they make her die?”

“We don’t know exactly.”

“Will you tell me when you know?”

“Yes.”

No invented certainty.

No family silence disguised as protection.

Marcus testified against Aaron and Samuel.

He also submitted his own leadership decisions for independent review.

“How much of this is your fault?” I asked him privately.

“Not the crimes.”

“Then what?”

“I built a system where loyalty to me mattered more than people questioning one another.”

He had discouraged junior guards from challenging senior access.

Not corrupt.

Unsafe.

Marcus redesigned the security division with independent audit rights.

No one person, including him, could erase footage.

He offered to resign.

I refused to decide immediately.

An outside panel reviewed his conduct and retained him under new oversight.

Accountability did not always require removal.

Sometimes it required limits.
