Chapter 19 - VICTOR WAS USED AS THE DECOYMalcolm’s plan depended on Victor being discovered.

The mysterious photograph was originally meant for me.
Aaron took it.
Malcolm intended to place it on my desk after the ledger disappeared.
I would see Victor meeting a federal agent.
Assume betrayal.
Direct all scrutiny toward him.
While Victor defended himself, the original evidence would be destroyed.
Victor disrupted the plan by placing the photograph himself before Aaron could alter it.
He wrote “Ask what he took” because he wanted me to look beyond the meeting.
The sentence could refer to Victor.
Or Malcolm.
Ambiguity forced inquiry.
Dangerous.
Effective.
The hidden hotel-room camera was part of the same decoy.
Malcolm wanted footage of Victor appearing confident after the call.
Edited correctly, it would look as though he mocked me.
Victor’s subtle smile had been recognition.
He saw a reflection in the camera lens and understood Malcolm was watching.
Every image could be given two stories.
The difference came from context.
That lesson changed how I viewed the entire case.
My father’s portrait told a story of industrial achievement.
The ledger supplied context.
The company’s survival told a story of leadership.
The pension losses supplied context.
Victor’s cooperation told a story of courage.
His earlier crimes supplied context.
Truth did not require choosing one image.
It required refusing to crop the frame.
Victor testified before a grand jury.
His daughter was cleared of knowing participation.
The shell company in her name was dissolved.
She rejected funds inherited through it.
Some money entered the restitution reserve.
Victor thanked me.
“I did not clear her,” I said.
“Evidence did.”
May you like
He nodded.
That distinction mattered to both of us.
