Chapter 24 - EMMA RETURNED TO THE STUDYTwo years after the break-in, Emma asked to return to the mansion.

The criminal case had ended.
The property was no longer needed as evidence.
Most family members wanted it sold.
I agreed.
Before the sale, Emma wanted to see the study.
We entered together.
The broken window had been replaced.
The bullet-damaged painting remained in storage.
The wall safe stood exposed.
Emma held Mr. Bunny beneath one arm.
“Is the bad book gone?”
“The ledger is in a protected archive.”
“Can anyone steal it?”
“They could try. Copies exist in several places.”
She nodded approvingly.
“Good.”
I showed her the empty safe.
No documents.
No codes.
No reason for an adult to enter at night.
“Can we close the wall?”
“We can.”
She thought about it.
“No.”
“Why?”
“So people know it was there.”
Her answer changed the sale agreement.
The new owner was the employee-benefit trust.
The mansion would become a training and historical center.
The study would remain preserved.
The safe stayed visible.
A plaque explained what had been hidden and who was harmed.
No dramatic family language.
Names.
Dates.
Facts.
Emma placed the old family photograph inside the safe.
“Shouldn’t you keep that?” I asked.
She shook her head.
May you like
“It belongs with the story.”
Then she walked out without looking back.
