Chapter 6 - THE SAFE WAS ALREADY EMPTYPolice and federal agents arrived before dawn.

I called them myself.
That decision would have shocked my father.
It shocked several company attorneys more.
They advised me to handle the matter through private counsel until we understood the exposure.
I refused.
A child had been threatened.
A security technician had been attacked.
The mansion was a potential crime scene.
Privacy no longer took priority.
Agent Reed entered the study at 4:10.
He confirmed Victor had been cooperating.
He did not confirm every allegation.
“The investigation is active,” he said.
“My daughter saw someone steal the ledger.”
“We need her account through a trained child interviewer.”
“She will not be questioned repeatedly.”
“Agreed.”
Marcus provided the recovered access records.
The attacker used his deputy’s code.
Marcus’s deputy, Aaron Pike, had disappeared.
His car remained at the mansion.
His phone was off.
Agent Reed examined the empty safe.
“When Victor arrived, was the ledger still here?”
“According to Emma.”
“Then Malcolm may not have left with it.”
“The other man took it.”
“Emma saw part of his body, not his face.”
I understood.
We had assumed the angry man was Malcolm because Victor named him.
That did not make the identification true.
The investigator found a narrow scrape inside the safe.
Fresh adhesive clung beneath one shelf.
Something else had been attached there.
Removed before Victor arrived.
The ledger might not have been the only missing item.
Marcus scanned the safe.
Behind the back panel, he found a shallow compartment.
Empty.
Only a torn strip of paper remained.
The printed letters showed:
…MMA WHIT…
Emma’s name.
My daughter had been connected to something hidden inside the wall long before she saw Victor.
I felt the room change around me.
“Why is my child’s name in that safe?”
No one answered.
Agent Reed placed the strip inside an evidence sleeve.
Marcus looked toward the family photograph.
“The mark on the back could be an archive code.”
He searched the old company database.
W-4917 belonged to a worker pension file.
The listed employee was Laura Whitmore.
My late wife.
Laura had worked as a corporate attorney before our marriage.
She died three years earlier after a sudden illness.

The safe did not contain only my father’s secrets.
It contained hers.
